NOD FOR BUS FARE HIKE: The State government yesterday agreed to hike bus fares following successful negotiations between the government officials and the bus operators at Panaji. As per the new proposed fare, Rs.4 (instead of Rs.3) will be charged for the first four kilometres while additional 35 paise will be charged for every subsequent kilometer. (GT) PRIVATE CLINICS: Nationalist Congress Party Goa unit chief, Dr Wilfred de Souza, has expressed doubts over the workability of the government's 'private clinic' plan at the Goa Medical College Hospital. Dr de Souza told Herald that it would not be advisable to implement the plan as GMC is a teaching institution and not just a hospital. "Under no circumstances should doctors occupying teaching posts at the GMC be allowed to practice privately there," Dr de Souza said, adding that their primary task of passing on medical skills to students, is bound to suffer. (H) TRAFFIC DISCIPLINE: A joint meeting of the traffic police and the department of Transport held at the Secretariat, yesterday, has evolved a comprehensive plan to usher in traffic discipline on State roads and help reduce accidents. (NT) YOUTH DIES IN MISHAP: Sudesh Rao, a 23-year-old pillion rider from Sangolda, died in a road mishap at Verna, while the rider, John Pinto, sustained severe injuries, when their motorcycle skidded off the road while negotiating a sharp curve. BOY INJURED: An 8-year-old Siolim boy, Akshay Kumar, was seriously injured when a motorcycle dashed against him near the Siolim market yesterday. (NT) NO MATERNITY LEAVE BEFORE DELIVERY: Until recently, the Education Department sanctioned maternity leave to teachers even prior to the actual delivery, if the medical advice was in favour of the teacher taking rest at home instead of teaching. However, it appears that of late, the department has taken a stand that maternity leave cannot be granted ahead of the actual date of delivery. (GT) HELD FOR FORGING DOCUMENTS: Namdev Navale and Krishna Navale, residents of Davorlim, Margao, have been arrested by the town police, for submitting forged documents for obtaining passport. (NT) DUO CAN'T BE STOPPED: The Untied Goans Democratic Party appears to have resigned to its fate that the two legislators, Mickky Pacheco and Babush Monseratte, have decided to join the BJP, with senior party leader Radharao Gracias saying little can be done to prevent the duo from crossing over given the prevailing legal and moral set-up. (H) BJP SET TO EXPAND BASE IN BENAULIM: With the likely entry of the local MLA and Tourism Minister, Mr Mickky Pacheco, who got elected on the UGDP ticket in Benaulim, into the BJP, the grassroots level workers have kept their fingers crossed. When Pacheco joined hands with the BJP to form the government, the BJP started concentrating on this constituency which has around 1,800 Hindu, 1,000-odd Muslim and rest Catholic voters. (NT) NO TRUST MOTION IN VELSAO-PALE: Four members of the Velsao-Pale village panchayat have moved a no-trust motion against the Sarpanch Wilson Vaz. (H) GIRL RESCUED: A commercial sex worker from the red-light area here has in a written complaint to the Vasco police alleged that she was forced into prostitution by the brothel keeper inspite of her plea to send her back to her native place. According to the complaint, the said sex worker was bought by the brothel keeper after paying Rs.30,000 through an agent, on the pretext of taking her to Peddarpuram for business purpose. (GT) SLAUGHTER STALLS: A joint operation by the South Goa Planning and Development Authority, Margao Municipality and the Animal Husbandry cracked a whip against the rampant slaughter of animals, particularly goats at the SGPDA market complex in Margao. (H) GUIDELINES FOR WATER SPORTS: The Bombay High Court at Goa recently directed the State government to ensure compliance of rules and regulations by water sports operators in light of April's tourist boat tragedy in which nine tourists lost their lives. (GT) COPS SEEK CELLPHONE DEALERS' HELP: The South Goa district police yesterday held a meeting with the cellphone dealers and internet service providers, as a part of its drive to check the rising crime graph. The meet was attended by 50 cellphone dealers besides sub-divisional police officers. Esteven D'Mello, a resident of Siolim, allegedly paid Rs.16,000 to one Francisco Lobo of Saligao who promised him a job with one Khalid Hassan in Bahrain. (GT) SURGE IN VOLTAGE DESTROYS APPLIANCES: Residents of Firguem Bhat in Merces witnessed the darker side of Electricity Department when electrical appliances of many in the area were destroyed presumably due to a surge in the voltage. Altogether 12 families have been affected due to high voltage which occurred around 4.30 in the evening. (H) MORMUGAO OFFICIALS ON HIGH ALERT: With continuous rains lashing the State, Mormugao district officials are on high alert, in view of a possible landslide in and around Sada Area in Vasco. (H) MILK-BREAK FOR MAPUSA COPS: Police at early morning PT got a break, due to milk. The engine of a rickshaw caught fire and threatened to engulf a cargo of milk packets yesterday at Mapusa. Luckily for the milk supplier and consumers, the incident occurred outside the Mapusa Police station while the PT session was on. (GT) A SCHOOL WITH 4 STUDENTS: The government primary school in Junas, Mandrem, has a spacious building complete with toilets, playground and all other facilities a school needs to have. But there's just one hitch. It has only four students. (GT) INTERNS BOYCOTT CLASSES: Interns at Ayurveda College, Shiroda, boycotted the classes and held a silent morcha in protest of non-payment of stipend by the management.
