"JHALMI, RAUT RUINED MGP": Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar yesterday squarely blamed Kashinath Jhalmi and Pandurang Raut for bringing the MGP to ruin and stoutly defended his decision to join the BJP. (GT) MGP HARDENS HEART: MGP's central committee has unanimously decided to issue a show cause notice to Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar and simultaneously seek his resignation as an MLA while hauling him up for a breach of party discipline. (GT) CONCERN OVER FOUR-LANE ROAD: The Campal-Miramar Residents Association has expressed serious concern over the likely impact of the proposed Rs.3-crore four-lane road project of the Corporation of the City of Panaji on environment. The construction work on the road stretch beginning from the Kala Academy to Miramar Circle would state after the monsoon and is expected to be completed within a year. (NT) MISAPPROPRIATION GHOST HAUNTS KHALAP: The Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank has filed a third complaint with the police department against beleaguered former MLA and bank chairman Ramakant Khalap. Reliable sources claimed that the complaint was regarding a multi-crore loan awarded by the bank to Bangarghatta farms, a Bangalore-based company. (GT) CLASSROOM LOCK-UP CASE: The inquiry conducted into the classroom lock-up of a tiny tot in a government primary school at Dona Paula has revealed lapses on the part of the teacher as well as the security man/gate-keeper. The seven-year-old boy, Shiv Kumar Singh of Standard II, had fallen asleep under a bench in the corner of his class and failed to wake up when the classes concluded for the day. A power failure also compounded the situation and the teacher failed to notice the child sleeping. (H) MID-DAY MEAL SCHEME: The Director of the Directorate of Education said that the Mid-Day Meal Scheme for primary schools, which was to be implemented in Sattari, Sanguem, Bicholim, Quepem, Pernem and Canacona talukas from mid-July, has now been postponed till mid-August. (NT) MINING REJECTS RUIN RIVONA FIELDS: The officers of the Zonal Agriculture Office were accompanied by farmers, who briefed them about the siltation of the paddy fields in Rivona by the mining water. The farmers pointed to the muddy water that directly flows in the Kushawati river. (GT) NH-17 A DEATH TRAP: More persons lost their lives in accidents on the national highway rather than the state roads, though the latter network is bigger. In all, 112 persons died and 1368 injured in road accidents across the state during the first six months of this year. (GT) CASTE CERTIFICATE: In a significant judgement, the Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court has held that the Class III and Class IV government employees do not fall within the creamy layer of the Backward Class unless they have the income of more than Rs.1 lakh other than from the salary or agriculture. The verdict is a fallout of a petition filed by Nichil Pednekar, a student, who was not provide Backward Class (Non-Creamy Section) caste certificate by the government. (NT) DEGREE SCHEME FOR POWER DEPT ENGINEERS: Realising the need for upgradation of qualification for engineers in the Electricity Department, the State government has decided to offer a scheme to the diploma holders for obtaining a bachelor's degree. (H) CLEARING OF PALOLEM KIOSKS: The Panjim bench of the Bombay High Court has directed that all the temporary seasonal kiosks and other establishments within the 200 metres High Tide Level at Palolem, Canacona, are to be cleared before July 29, failing which the Canacona Municipal Council has been asked to raze them using a bulldozer on July 30. (H) ONE MORE SUCCUMBS: The tragic pilgrimage to Nanij, Ratnagiri, on Monday claimed its fifth life, when 50-year-old Vanita B Talkar succumbed to injuries at the GMC at Bambolim on July 17. (H) "PLANT-THIEVES": Since the day our city gardens saw a facelift several months ago, plant thieves have been on the prowl. Daniel D'Souza, a horticulturist attached to the Corporation of the City of Panaji, says gardens located near bus stops are the most vulnerable. "Bus commuters wait for the moment when their bus is about to leave. Then they pull out the plant, roots and all, from the ground. At once they escape," D'Souza told GT. Today, when the government has taken a decision to depute a full-time secretary in Benaulim, the panchayat has had as many as three secretaries in a span of just 17 days, with officials in the know not ruling out further changes. Around 25-odd tiny tots are believed to be enrolled in the pre-school, an activity which has irked a neighbour putting up in the same building. (H) CASH STOLEN: Cash and articles worth Rs.6000 were stolen from the residence of one Maria D'Souza at Curca. STUDENT LOSES COLLEGE FEES, ENDS LIFE: In a heart-breaking incident, a students committed suicide after she lost the money she was carrying for paying her college admission fees in transit. The incident occurred yesterday when Jyoti Ratnakar Naik, 17, from Hosapttana in Honnavar taluka unable to bear the loss of her admission fees took the extreme step by hanging herself in her house.
