DEAD PRAWNS IN QUELOSSIM: Quelossim residents are up in arms against a prawn
farming company for allegedly releasing polluted water into the Zuari river.
The residents informed that on Sunday they noticed eagles hovering over the
lakh-and-a-half sq mt farm. A visit revealed dead tiger-prawns floating on
the water surface. Yesterday morning, the residents alleged that the sluice
gates were opened and contaminated water along with dead prawns was released
into the Zuari river. (GT)

GOA'S IRON ORE EXPORTS JUMP: Iron ore exports from the State have reached
new heights last season with total exports touching 23.72 million tones in
2002-2003 up from 19.56 million tones in the previous season, a growth of
21.27 per cent. A major factor contributing to the growth, has been
attributed to the increase in iron ore demand from China whose
infrastructure development is growing at a phenomenal place. However, Japan
still remains the major importer with a share of 45 per cent. (H)

"NO PULLOUT FROM GOVT": Though the MGP central committee has declared
withdrawal of support to the 13-month coalition led by the BJP, PWD Minister
Ramkrishna Dhavlikar maintained that it continues unchanged..Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar dismissed the MGP's decision to pull out of his 13-month
collation government, stating that he had not received the support of its
two MLAs through (president) Pandurang Raut. (GT)

SPLINTER GROUPS JOIN HANDS: A meeting of the newly-formed splinter groups,
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (Nationalist) and United Goans Democratic
Party (Secular) pledged to continue its support to the 13-month old Parrikar

UGDP TO MOVE HC: The presidium of the United Goans Democratic Party at its
meeting yesterday decided to file a petition before the High Court and also
approach the Speaker of the legislative assembly seeking disqualification of
Mr Francis Xavier Pacheco and Mr Atanasio Monseratte. (NT)

RELAXATION ON AMPLIFIED SOUND: The government has decided to amend its
extraordinary notification issued under the Noise Pollution Rules following
a petition filed by the Goa Environment Federation that it would permit the
use of loud speakers at night for more than the stipulated 15 days of the
year. (H)

STRANGLES FRIEND TO DEATH: A mason's act of pulling the holy thread around
his friend's neck in a fit of anger while being in an intoxicated condition
proved fatal for the later. Ammana Basavraj, a mason, had a verbal
altercation with his friend Uttam Kumar Das (both highly intoxicated) and
caught hold of the holy thread on the latter's neck and twisted it. Not
knowing that he had killed Uttam, he slept with his arms around the later
throughout the night. It was only yesterday morning, when he woke up, that
he realized had had murdered Uttam. (GT)

4 ARABS HELD IN COLVA: The Colva police yesterday arrested four Arab
nationals on the charge of assaulting a lifeguard and a tourist policeman at
the Colva beach, when the life-guard requested them not to swim in the
waters since the weather was rough and unfavourable. (NT)

PROVISIONAL CHARGESHEET IN GANG-RAPE CASE: A provision charge-sheet has been
filed by the Crime branch on Monday the District and Sessions Court against
Vishal Mehta or Vasco and Roy Fernandes alias Mascarenhas of Majorda, two
Fine Art students for having been allegedly involved in the gang-rape of
their 18-year-old colleague, in the college campus. (H)

PONDA BESET WITH TRAFFIC PROBLEMS: Considered to be one of the fastest
growing city of Goa, Ponda is almost bursting at the seams due to lack of
foresight in planning, even as the available infrastructure cracks under the
load of the ever growing traffic inflow. A total of 220 public vehicles
(buses and mini-buses) pour into this area every day. Saddled with a
population of roughly around 2,000, the vehicle ownership of 31,000 far

RIVER SAL DYING A SLOW DEATH: Once the life-line of Salcete, river Sal
running parallel to the Arabian sea, is slowly but steadily decaying. It's
years now since navigation has totally stopped in the water channel, a
hallmark of the river over the decades. Even the salt pans, once dotting
along the river banks are fast disappearing and giving way for aqua-farming.
Today, the river is more known for the aquatic weeds and a dumping ground
for garbage and animal carcasses. (H)

PROTECT FISH RESOURCES: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has asked
the Central government to take necessary steps required to protect the fish
resources of the coastal States, taking into consideration the experiences
of other countries. These remarks have come in the wake of petition filed by
the Goa Environment Federation pertaining to the fishing ban. (H)

ACCIDENTS AT PORVORIM: The Porvorim Residents Welfare Association has
expressed concern over the number of road accidents occurring on the
Porvorim highway. Practically every week there is one accident, many of
which go unreported, the association's press note said. (GT)

ONE DROWNS: Madanlal Kurana, a 24-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh, drowned
in the sea off Baina on Sunday. He had gone for a swim at the Baina Beach
along with a friend, when Madanlal was dragged by undercurrents into the
sea. (H)

FEW TAKERS IN ARTS: Poor admissions in the Arts faculty has started taking
its roll on higher secondary schools in the State and the Department of
Education, to begin with, has decided to close down Arts stream in one high
secondary school even as the sword is hanging over a dozen of them in
different parts of the State. (H)

"GULAB" AWARDS: CM Parrikar presented the "Gulab" awards instituted by the
Konkani monthly magazine "Gulab" to nine persons for their outstanding
contribution in the field of literature, sports, science, music and art, at
a function held at Gomant Vidya Niketan Hall, Margao, on Sunday. (GT)

INDIA'S CONJOINED TWINS: A pair of newly-born conjoined twins, Nilu (blue)
and Pinku (pink),  abandoned in a New Delhi hospital by their parents, will
be cared for by Pringle Anganvada, a non-governmental organisation, the
Indian media reported. The two have separate heads, chests, hearts,
stomachs, lungs and spinal cords but their liver, bladder, intestines and
genitalia are fused. They also have just two legs between them. (AFT report

mother nor father, solicits help for medical treatment as he is suffering
from cyanotic congenital heart diseases and desperately needs to undergo

VELSAO-PALE SARPANCH RESIGNS: The Sarpanch of Velsao-Pale village panchayat,
Mr Wilson Vaz, has tendered his resignation from the post, as a consequence

PLANT SHOW IN MAPUSA: The Parent-Teacher Association of St Britto High
School, Mapusa, will organise a two-day plant show "Britto Flora 2003" on
July 26 and July 27 from 10 am to 4 pm on both days. (H)

KONKANI SCHOLARSHIP: The management of Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr in
collaboration with Caivalho family of Karnataka, has planned to grant three
scholarships to BA (Konkani) third year students from the academic year

EXHIBITION ON NATURE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will inaugurate a
four-day exhibition on nature "Nature's Secret of Healthy Living" at the
Menezes Braganza Hall in Panjim, today. Displayed at the expo will be around
