MARG seeks white paper on traffic situation in state
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Movement for Amity towards Roads in Goa (MARG) has asked the
state government to publish a 'white paper' on traffic and transport situation
in the state during the last ten years. The MARG activists demanded that
the 'white paper' should include the number of accidents and deaths
occurred on the roads during this period. They have also asked the state
government to publish policies to be adopted during the next ten years
with respect to traffic and transport in state.

"Goa is attracting more and more domestic and foreign tourists. Besides,
it would be a permanent destination for the international film festival and other
big festivals. It is, therefore, incumbent on the government to have an up-to-date
well-trained traffic force," says the memorandum.

The MARG has welcomed the idea of establishing a distinct traffic machinery
within the police and making arrangement to modernise, computerise and train
them as per the requirements of the times.

The MARG has also urged upon the government to revert substantial part of the
revenue collected as a road fine by the police to the police traffic cell to satisfy
their genuine needs.

The transport department also needs to be modernised. Presenting a perfect
transport and traffic facility in the state is their responsibility, states the memorandum.

The NGO has also insisted that the public works department should take measures
to repair accident-prone zones. It has also said that driver training institute which
issues approval certificates to apprentices should be established in Goa. These
certificates shall be considered by the government to issue driving licences to
these apprentices.
