TOURIST KILLED IN MISHAP, FIVE INJURED: One tourist was killed and five others were injured, when the car in which they were traveling rammed into the compound wall of a building near Gymkhana at Campal in the wee hours yesterday. 25-year-old Pankaj Dhugallwal, occupying the middle row banged into the wind screen suffering serious injuries. He breathed his last while being shifted to the Goa Medical College Hospital. Five others sustained injuries. (NT) HELD FOR FRAUD: The police have arrested Yeshwant Y Parab of Pajifond, Margao, for allegedly cheating the public to the tune of almost Rs.74 lakh. (GT) ONE SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES: Satyawan Gaude, 42, of Bandora, succumbed to the injuries he received in an accident at Kashinath, Bandora, yesterday. The accident took place on Saturday night when the scooter which Gaude was riding suddenly skidded off the road due to oil spillage. (Shaikh Jamaluddin in NT) BUS COMMUTERS TO OPPOSE FARE HIKE: The Goa Rajya Pravasi Sanghatana (All Goa Commuters Association), which met in Margao on July 26, resolved to oppose the proposed bus fare hike by the government tooth and nail. The meeting chaired by noted Konkani writer, N Shivdas, felt that the fare hike was unwarranted and without any rationale. (NT) HILL-SLOPE FARMING: Cultivation on hill-slopes and at the foot of the hill has been abandoned in recent years in the Pernem taluka following changes in the consumption pattern of the populace and coupled with the belief that farming is no longer a lucrative occupation. The cultivation of crops in the upland area included minor grains like kulidd, nachni, pakhdi, savo and oil seed called til. These minor grains, which were once part and parcel of the staple diet of the villagers are no longer grown, as eating habits of the people have changed.
