16th August evening was fun time at the 'Moira Club' (as it is commonly called).
Members with their families and their guest started arriving from 7:30 pm. For technical reasons, the club does not have a permanent bar licence. And since spot licences take the toll being exhorbitant, members and their guest cater to themselves with their own booze, with other items including snacks etc. available off the counter. It was the biggest gathering so far with around 120 people, with the kids kicking the football around on the badmington court and the adults mixing around, dancing to the Goan folk/pop/medley CD music. The games were specially entertaining with 10 teams of 7 each trying to match the ten sets of Herald newspapers containing 14 thoroughly mixed pages. The winning team got the whiskey bottle to the cheers and shouts. Then there was the horse race, with the betting and the cheering being great fun. There after the dinner was served. The evening was alive and the World Goa Day fully celebrated untill 12 pm with members and guest making promisses to return the next year for a bigger and better organised World Goa Day celebrations. It is to be remembered that the Moira Club is one of the oldest clubs in Goa, set up in the early 1920s. It boasts of a heritage club building with a full size football ground and a badmington court with a recently built stage, in front , and a big enough space behind to accomodate a couple of tennis courts, presently used for parking. The club has come alive after a long gap of dormancy with a brand new constitution and managing committee of 11 members elected for a two year term on pannel basis. For the last 3 terms (present term included) the club has been running under the efficient & dynamic stewartship of Mr. Romeo Coelho (Ex- BT UK) as its President. A thought for the Day: 17th. August, 2003 has been dedicated by the Catholic Church as "JUSTICE SUNDAY" with a message that "Justice leads to Peace, and Peace leads to Love" ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
