I think EM's remarks on FN are unfair and plainly, not founded in fact. I had, what in retrospect I consider a privilege, of meeting this budding journalist 20 years ago, during staff-recruiting interviews Rajan Narayan and I conducted for the *oHERALDo,* with which I was associated in the newspaper's fledgling days. It must have taken Rajan and me less than 5 minutes of talking to this young Grad to decide he was hired. I have seen Fred bloom and grow to the level he has achieved today, not just in journalism but in varied areas like computer software and even social service - Linux, CSI, computers for schools prog, et al. Why, even jointly administering GoaNet and several related websites is no mean task, as I can imagine... As a working journalist of distinct calibre, who could have easily landed highly remunerative jobs anywhere in the English-speaking world, rather then do what he is right now doing in Goa, I guess Fred needs no certificate of professional competence either from EM or from me. His work, output and its quality, speaks for itself. Honestly, besides having admired the man's talents and devotion to his profession, I have always wondered about two things about Fred: a. How, as a freelancer (not yoked to any particular news organization) he makes material ends meet, and... b. Considering the time he must be spending for GoaNet alone, whether he has any time left to sleep, forget personal/social life. [Glad both my concerns seem to be reasonably unfounded: On the first Q, I guess, newspapers today pay far more than the Rs.30 or 40/- I used to get from The Navhind Times even for full-page Sunday features in the mid-1970s. On the latter, I am glad to have recently learnt from this forum that Fred has fathered a baby... :-) ] One may not agree with the views or preferences of the man, but at the very least, for all the *fukat* time he spends posting news items or digests one may have never chanced across in these days of info-plenty, let us not reward him with unfair and uncharitable brickbats... As for me, I have no hesitation in showering FN with choicest kudos!
