At at time when the official relations between Portugal and India were taking time to reach normalcy, despite the move of the then Portuguese foreign minister (later President) Dr. Mario Soares, to recognize in 1974 Goa's integration into India, Fr. John Correia-Afonso, former principal of St. Xavier's College and Director of Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture (Mumbai) took the initiative of bringing together historians from India, Portugal and other countries to analyse and share their research experiences. That is how the ISIPH series of seminars was born in December 1978. These seminars were held alternately in India and in Portugal (and its overseas territories, including Macau before its devolution to China) and once in Brasil to commemorate its occupation by Portugal five hundred years ago. To commemorate 25 years of these seminars which have contributed immensely to update the historical research about the world, historically linked by Portugal since 1498, ISIPH historians will meet in Goa where it all started from September 21 to 25th next. The theme will be "Indo-Portuguese History: The Global Trends". It will also assess the performance of the past 25 years in a special symposium on 24th morning. Professors K.S. Mathew, A.T. Matos and Teotonio R. de Souza will submit their evaluations for discussion. About 37 participants from India, Brazil,USA,Belgium,Germany,France Portugal and Australia will deliberate from 22nd to 25th. Participation is by invitation. The Valedictory function will take place on 25th at 17 hours. Registered Observers will be allowed under following conditions: Researchers teachers of history or people genuinely interested in the subject. Observer fee: Rs.2.500. The observer will be entitled to conference material, conference tea/coffee and lunches. The observers will be guests for 3 dinners. The hotel Cidade de Goa, where the participants will be lodged, offers a special package for Observers coming from abroad ---- USD 350 for 5 nights per single room on MAP basis. In additon they will have to pay the Seminar organizers Rs.2,500 towards lunches ,coffee etc.They will be guests for 3 dinners and a boat cruise . Indian observers staying in the hotel will pay Rs.3,000 on BB per double room and Rs.2,500 on BB per single room. In additon they have to pay to the Seminar Rs. 2,500 and will be guest for 3 dinners and boat cruise.
