"GOA CULTURE IS NOT PORTUGUESE": Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar bemoaned that Goa's culture has been projected as Portuguese culture and it was projected that Goa is a land of women and wine and people simply like fun. The projection is wrong as Goa has its own culture derived from the Konkan region of Eastern India. Parrikar said that Goa was projected in a way that has created a wrong image at the national and international level thereby humiliating Goans. He was speaking at the inauguration of an exhibition of aerial photographs "Birds Eye-view of Goa" by Gopal Bodhe, organised by the Department of Information and Publicity, at the Nehru Centre in Mumbai on August 19. (GT) IMPUGNED ORDER IMPROPER: The Additional District and Sessions Court, Panjim, has quashed and set aside the impugned order of the Judicial Magistrate that dismissed an application filed by the state seeking blood samples of Vishal Mehta and Roy Fernandes-accused in the gang-rape of a student of Fine Arts College, Altinho-Panjim-to conduct DNA test. (H) CM PULLS UP CALANGUTE, CANDOLIM SARPANCHAS: The Chief Minister came down heavily on the poor performances of Calangute and Candolim sarpanchas for keeping both villages undeveloped despite having good income to their panchayats. A highly decomposed carcass of a cow was lying by the side of the road a few meters away from the Chatrapati Shivaji Fort at Farmagudi and the other one on the way to Haveli. More than 1000 people have been trained by the department since 1995 in mushroom cultivation but today only handful of people are into mushrooms business. According to the latest NASSCOM estimates, the BPO industry exported services worth 2.3 b dollars in 2002-03. India has the potential to generate 13.8 b dollars for off-shore BPO exports by 2007.
