Many of the stories that we had heard in the past on Idi Amin, on closer examination, turned out to be untrue. The man was a paranoid dictator, a hostage to delusions of grandeur. What was interesting was that he was initially recruited into the Army by the British as a cook! His promotion to the officer cadre was also an accident of history. When the British vacated Uganda, the Ugandan army was woefully short of enlisted officers.
