GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 21 Aug 2003 RED ALERT FOR JAUNDICE IN PANAJI: The government has sounded a red alert for Panaji city in the wake of a high incidence of viral hepatitis cases even as a few hotels flouting norms of sanitation are likely to be sealed. While the number of cases have mounted to 123 with seven more cases being reported yesterday, Health Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar appealed to the city residents to follow precautions in consuming water and food at home or in hotels. CONTAMINATION SOURCE FOUND! The inflow of filthy water from outside the kitchen of a city hotel in the main pipeline has been pinpointed as the source of the city's latest health problem. PWD sources said large quantities of water which had stagnated in chambers and cavities underground due to unhygienic conditions outside the hotel premises found its way into the main pipeline. (GT) SEWAGE, DRINKING WATER AND JAUNDICE: "When newspapers first raised the alarm, with a story about sewage getting mixed with drinking water pipelines, nobody took notice. Then hotel inspections revealed contamination of water. But said to say, drinking water pollution does not make headlines. Once we have grabbed headlines and consoled our souls, we can go back to cola-guzzling."
