JAUNDICE SCARE: WHIP ON CITY HOTELS: Taking serious note of the rising
number of jaundice cases in the city, the government has drawn a stringent
plan to improve hygienic conditions in city hotels. Roadside stalls will be
sealed, hotels and restaurants will be given a hygiene grading from A to D
and licenses of those violating health, food and drugs norms will be
terminated. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the press on August 21 that
health authorities had been directed to shut down restaurants which were
responsible for contamination of water. (GT)

CASES NEAR 150-MARK: Even as the number of persons affected by viral
hepatitis reached 141 with 18 more cases reported yesterday, 15 samples of
patients blood had been sent to NIV, Pune. (GT)

JAUNDICE SPREADS TO BICHOLIM, SANQUELIM: The outbreak of viral hepatitis
(jaundice) has spread to other parts of the State, with cases being reported
in Bicholim and Sanquelim. "Although the situation is not of a serious kind,
we are taking all the necessary care. Most of the cases we received had
contracted the illness in Panjim," Dr Karpe, Health Officer of the Bicholim
Primary Health Centre, said. (H)

HYGIENE: GMC CANTEEN NO BETTER: Even though the focus of attention is on the
restaurants in central Panjim, a visit to the canteens of Goa Medical
College at Bambolim revealed that they too are apparently run in unhygienic
conditions. (H)

"GOVT FAILED TO CHECK PIPES": Owners of Panjim-based restaurants are of the
view that the government instead of setting its system right, is blaming
them for the viral Hepatitis outbreak. The hoteliers agreed that they would
co-operate with the government in maintaining their establishments as per
the hygiene norms but expect the government to reciprocate in improving the
infrastructure particularly of water and sewage systems. (H)

BAN SALE OF UNCOVERED FOOD: In the wake of the jaundice outbreak in the
State capital, all school authorities in Goa have been directed to ensure
that sale of uncovered food items in and around schools be prohibited
immediately. (H)

MAPUSA KTC BUS STAND BRIMMING WITH FILTH: The stink at the Mapusa KTC
bus-stand part, the KTC grounds are littered with thrash in various stages
of decay. The KTC stand is also full of large potholes which have now turned
into big brown puddles. Near the vehicle-entrance, a large horde of cattle
are ruminating luxuriously and dung cakes are generously spattered all
around. Like the buses, the cattle now seem to be a permanent feature of the

FAMILY LAWS SHOULD BE HOLISTIC: The process of review of family laws of Goa
must be holistic, democratic and consultative, involving the various special
stakeholders in the laws like women, children, senior citizens, differently
abled persons as also professionals like lawyers and counselors and judges
who have grappled with the law. This was the consensus arrived at a meeting
organised by Bailancho Saad to take stock of the review process of the
family laws of Goa. (GT)

BODY FOUND: The body of 55-year-old Narayan Govind Dessai of
Ramnagar-Colvale, who committed suicide by jumping into the Chapora river
from the Colva bridge on August 16, was found on August 21 floating in the
river at Colvale. (H)

NURSE ROBBED: A nurse, Sajina Hussein Talepil, residing at Altinho-Mapusa
was yesterday relieved of her gold chain, after two young men approached
her, offering to polish the gold ornament. The nurse, who felt tempted to
have her gold chain polished, immediately handed over the chain to the
youth, who fled from the site. (H)

PEDESTRIAN KILLED: A 45-year-old pedestrian, Mariann Felizardo, from Mapa,
Panchawadi, was killed on the spot when he was knocked down by a speeding
pickup at Shiroda. The driver of the pick-up fled the scene without
informing the police. (NT)

GOVT SAYS SOFT DRINKS SAFE: The government on August 21 said its tests have
found carbonated drinks manufactured by MNC giants Coca Cola and Pepsi
contain pesticides residues well within the safety limits but agreed to the
Opposition demand of a Joint Parliamentary Committee into the issue. (PTI
report in Herald)

UK BUSINESS TEAM TO VISIT GOA: A team of 10 businesspersons representing
five British companies and eight senior members of the commercial arm of the
British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, will be visiting Goa on August
28-29, on an outreach programme to explore possibilities of increasing
Indo-British business ties in the region. (H)

COW SLAUGHTER BAN BILL PUT IN COLD STORAGE: In the face of stiff Opposition
from its crucial allies TDP, DMK, JD(U), Trinamool Congress and PMK apart
from other parties, the government beat a retreat in the Lok Sabha and
shelved plans for introduction of a Bill for banning cow slaughter but
decided to convene an all-party meeting in a bid to evolve a consensus. (PTI

SYMPOSIUM ON CIVIL CODE: The Goa Union of Journalists will organise a
symposium on 'Common Civil Code' at GUJ office, Shramshakti Bhavan,
Patto-Panaji on 23 August at 10.30 am. Advocate General ANS Nadkarni and
noted advocate Amrut Kansar will participate in the symposium. (GT)

TIATR SHOULD BE GIVEN NEW DIRECTION: With modernization and technological
changes, tiatr also needs to be upgraded to suit the taste of the new
generation, stated the chairman of Kala Academy, Mr Pratpasingh Rane, while
speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the silver jubilee
celebrations of Kala Mogi, Candolim, at the Kala Academy, on August 21.
President of Kala Mogi, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo, briefed about the institution'
s contribution to tiatr stage. (NT) Well-known musician Remo Fernandes was
the guest of honour along with veteran tiatrist John Claro. The entertaining
programme ended with the group depicting some choice scenes and songs from a
number of their award-winning Konkani plays.

Bhimbekta (Madhya Pradesh). And archaeologists here are dreaming about
staking a claim for its inclusion in the UNESCO's world heritage list. (GT)

O COQUEIRO FOUNDER'S DAY: O'Coqueiro Hotel has declared August 22 as Founder
's Day to commemorate the 75th birth anniversary of the founder of O'
Coqueiro, Gines Viegas. Viegas, who was born on August 22, 1928, passed away
on May 13, 2003. He was the first person to bring the 'family atmosphere' in
the restaurant business in Goa. The 'chicken cafrial', which originated in
Africa, was introduced in Goa by Viegas with modifications to suit the Goan
