It also urged the general public not to get panicky about the spread of the virus and to help the medical fraternity to control the menace by taking precautions like drinking boiled water, eating hygienic food and to report at once to the doctor if any of the symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting and high coloured (yellowish urine) was noted.
IMA Goa State honorary general secretary Dr.Shekhar Salkar said that the jaundice was the symptom and not the disease and clarified that there were no deaths due to viral hepatitis in the state.
He said that ther deaths reported in a section of press was not due to due to viral hepatitis but due to liver cirrhosis. According to him, around 1500 to 2000 people die because of alcoholic liver disease causing jaundice in Goa and therefore should not be mistaken with viral hepatitis.
Meanwhile, Dr. Salkar who is also the Convenor of the Medical Cell of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also appealed to all party cadre to spread the hepatitis awareness in their respective areas under the guidance of ministers and MLA's.
He said that all the BJP Mandal Committees have been informed to spread awareness of hepatitis with the help of publicity material available at Primary Health Centres or to seek the help of Directorate of Health Services to obtain more information on the subject.
Local restaurant owners should be requested to keep utmost cleanliness and any irregularities shpould be informed to the health services personnel. Any person affected by hepatitis should be immediately reported to the health centres for effective control and checking further spread in the area, he said. ----------------------------------------------- Gomantak Times 25/8/03 page 2 -----------------------------------------------
