GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 27 Aug 2003 CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT SWIMMING IN MONSOONS: Concerned by the increasing drowning cases involving domestic tourists, the State government has decided to launch an awareness programme for the domestic tourists about the potential dangers of swimming mainly during monsoons and also to intensify patrolling along the coast. Announcing this at a press briefing in the Secretariat press room, the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that a "massive" awareness campaign would soon be undertaken by early September whereby leaflets would be distributed to all the tourists through the hotels they stay in. "Entering the sea during the monsoon is as good as committing suicide'' will be the message given to the visiting tourists. (H)
RED CARP[ET WELCOME AWAITS CHARTER TOURISTS: In a major bid to boost tourism, the Airport Authority of India has decided to welcome charter flights every day instead of three days a week during the tourist season starting from October at the Dabolim Airport, Goa. The Tourism department expects more than 600 charter flights to land here between October, this year to May, next year. The first charter would arrive on October 1. "Last year, 370 charter flights arrived in Goa and this year, they would touch 600 mark," stated director of Tourism, Mr N Suryanarayan, hoping that in future the number of charter would even go upto 1,000. (NT) TWO GOANS KILLED IN ACCIDENT: Two Goans, car driver John Coutinho and one Gojia, both aged 50, died while four others were seriously injured in a mishap that occurred on the Mumbai-Goa national highway at Koshimbale yesterday morning. (GT) AFTER JAUNDICE A 'RED-EYED MONSTER': While Panjim is in the grip of a jaundice outbreak, another 'red-eyed monster' has reared its head - conjunctivitis. Officials of the Directorate of Health Services steadfastly deny that there are any cases of conjunctivitis in town, and say that none have come to their notice. However, when Herald contacted some prominent doctors and pharmacists, the ground reality became quite clear indicating that the health services is still in the dark. It may be recalled that the Hepatitis E would have been much under control had the health department and particularly the epidemiological section been pro-active. (H) BODIES OF THREE STUDENTS RECOVERED: Three bodies of students, who drowned off Candolim beach on Monday, were recovered yesterday. However, to bodies were yet to be traced. The body of Asraj Maheshwari, 21, was fished out on Monday while the bodies of Saurabcharan, 21, and Javed Iqbal, 22, were recovered yesterday morning. (GT) CLOSURE OF HOTELS HITS OFFICE GOERS: Most hotels, bars, restaurants and eateries in Panaji downed their shutters yesterday (August 26) in the wake of a voluntary closure of their establishments for carrying out clean-up measures and repairs. (GT) GADAS AND D CLASS EATERIES TO BE SHUT: All eateries not observing the set norms of hygiene in the main towns have been asked to close down while gaddas in municipal areas and coastal belts would have to stop operations from today. (GT) TO GRAPPLE WITH GARBAGE: Urban Development Minister, Digambar Kamat, returns back to Goa on Wednesday after a brief sojourn to Europe, but he has a task cut out for him, which would ultimately decide the fate of the common garbage dumping site for South Goa district. As things stand today, the battle lines stands clearly drawn: While the government has invoked the "urgency" clause to acquire 3,62,146 square meters of land at Bendulem (Bendorem) in Balli, to set up the waste treatment facility for entire South Goa, the local residents are up in arms, demanding scrapping of the proceedings. (H) JAUNDICE CASES IN PORVORIM: Porvorim and surrounding areas have come under the spell of viral hepatitis, with as many as 48 jaundice cases being recorded in Porvorim. Incidentally, one of the 48 patients happens to be Porvorim Police Inspector Gundu Naik. "Nearly 90% of the patients are working in Panjim and had frequented the restaurants and eating houses in the capital city. In Porvorim and surrounding areas, eatables are being sold openly in gaddas. Porvorim police said the mishap took place at about 9.45 am, when Gangaram Waman Vast and his wife Supriya (38), natives of Arambol-Pernem but residing at New Vaddem in Vasco, were proceeding on a Hero Honda motorcycle (GA-02-L-9678) to Arambol, to attend the death anniversary of Gangaram's father. In a press release, he said this was necessary due to the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival where the people would be taking their Ganesh idols at late hours for immersion. Gonsalves also requested PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavlikar to direct PWD officials to repair all the roads of St Cruz constituency which he said made pedestrians and vehicles difficult to travel on the road. (NT) PLASTIC, GLASS BOTTLE COLLECTION CENTRES: The Margao Municipal Council yesterday decided to set-up centres for collection of plastic and glass bottles and door-to-door collection of garbage shortly. It was decided to set up a number of collection centres for glass bottles and other plastic waste throughout the city. "This would help the people to dispose off their waste in an effective manner", Naik observed. ABVP secretary Hridaynath Shirodkar claimed that such a move would make education an expensive affair.
