It is with deep anguish that we Goans have realised the stark truth about the hotel and canteen industry's deception of all of us - the innocent public.
We have always been thinking about their misdeeds, but only now the bitter truth is out in the press. It is beyond doubt now that there is a large explosive epidemic of viral hepatitis in Goa, particularly emerging in the capital city, Panjim.
The sudden large numbers of jaundice cases in the Goan community is enough evidence that it has achieved epidemic proportions. It is laughable that when this is the truth and it is well known to those concerned, the officials and politicians are busy shielding each other from public ire.
I feel the High Court must take cognizance of the total failure of the concerned systems and make them answerable, namely the health department, the FDA and above all the Panjim municipal corporation.
I feel unless some heads roll in these times, there will never be any sort of deterrent to prevent such epidemics in future. It is still a mystery why the defaulting hotels have not yet been shut down by the government when there are clients still visiting these places and getting infected.
If the Governement fails to act now, the disease will be established as an ongoing endemic disease like in olden times in Goa. Just like how they neglected malaria, when it arrived in Goa 18 years ago or so.
The defaulting hotels must pay compensation to the affected victims. If doctors can be made to pay up for dereliction in their duties, why not these scoundrels who loot us of our money and spread diseases?
