The address of welcome was rendered by Maurice Coutinho, President of Goa Academy. In his speech the Toronto goans were informed about the significance of World Goa Day and how important it was to show our solidarity with goans world over. They were reminded of the need to begin the process of bringing back konkanni in our lives . Rich tributes were paid to Mr. Rene Barretto, chief co-ordinator of World Goa Day who has endeavoured to unite goans worldwide to this worthy cause and also to Mr. Basilio Magno Pereira who has composed the song PROUD TO BE A GOAN and gifted it to goans all over the world to be sung on Goa Day. He thanked the Toronto goans for their spontaneous and enthusiastic support for this worthy cause and obtained their commitment to do so in the ensuing years also. Mr. Coutinho assured the gathering that with their support he would ensure World Goa Day in 2004 would be a resounding success and an event to remember. The program commenced with a litany to Our Blessed Virgin Mary sung in Latin by the Divar Choral Group which was followed by the hymns SOGOT SANGATA MELLIA and IMMACULADA MORIE sung in konkanni, after which all sang the the hymn SAM FRACISCO XAVIER. The lighter sude of the program began with a session of konkanni songs by DJ SYMPHONY featuring Cheryl Anne and Richard Coutinho The Divar Choral group featuring Clarina Coutinho, Anthony Azavedo, Maurice Coutinho,Flavia Remedios, Anne Pinto, and Milena Azavedo sang the song PROUD TO BE A GOAN and everyone enthusiastically joined in the chorus This was followed by some live music for dancing. The next item on the program was a song COSSOLI BAIL MOJI sung by Maurice Coutinho accompanied by Constantino Pinto and Johnny D'Souza on the guitar. Thereafter the entire gathering joined the DIvar Choral Group to sing konkani mandos and dulpods:-Angoun amim keloli dogainim, Kaunddea kiteac corta tentar, Moji soiric nuim re zaliJohnny mojea mogachea, Undra mojea mama, Morgovam toueaguer. Dinner was served soon after with lots of beer and wine throughout the show. The evening ended with a farewell speech by Maurice Coutinho after which everyone sang the farewell song ADEUS CORCHO ZALO VELLU and then dispersed. Because of time constraints all the goans of Toronto could not be contacted in time to attend the show but a beginning has been made and Toronto placed on the WORLD GOA DAY map and God willing it will remain there forever. According to the comments of most of the participants it was a memorable day and an enjoyable experience. Maurice Coutinho.
