--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660 Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Press clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.5% of Salcete's population may not get voter's ID cards -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nearly 2.5 per cent of Salcete's voting population may not be covered under voters identity card scheme. This was realised during the recently held meeting of electoral officers with Chief Election Officer, Mr B S Bhalla.
During the survey conducted by the government officials it was revealed that nearly 2.5 per cent of voting population from Salcete stays abroad. The officials including South Goa Collector, Mr J B Singh, additonal collectors, Mr G P Naik and Mr Narayan Sawant, deputy collector Mr Deepak Dessai reviewed the voters' identity card drive.
It may be recalled that Election Commission (EC) has given a deadline of September, this year, for the state to cover 85 per cent of voting population with voters' identity cards.
Interestingly, under immense pressures to meet the deadline the district administration has undertaken house-to-house awareness drive besides holding panchayat level meetings.
It is also learnt that the officials so far were able to cover only 68 per cent of population which is much less than the target. The officials however are optismistic that they would achieve the target after deleting the surplus names of voters listed.
According to these officials there are around 2000 people from Margao constituency who have migrated to other region. Similiarly the names of 1000 voters from Curtorim and 1400 from Navelim would be deleted following their shifting. And this would help to raise the percentage of people covered under voters identity cards.
"We have a permanent centre in Margao which is open throughout for any voter to drop in and get his voter identity card," stated an official. --------------------------------------------------- The Navhind Times 27/8/03 page 6 ---------------------------------------------------
