COURSES AND CAREERS: Finding your way around.... Compiled by Yvonne Vaz raynon at sancharnet.in Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a young person has to make. It is a decision which will affect your future life. The right choice can be made only if it is based on your interests, abilities and personal qualities(aptitude). Instead of trying to fit yourself into a career, you should find a career that fits you. The process of choosing a career and deciding the course of study leading to it should start in high school. 1 Find out all you can about one or more careers that you feel are suitable for you. 2 It is also important to know the job opportunities in the career of your choice. 3 Find out about the institutions which offer training and education that you will require. Do not wait till after the SSC results are out to decide whether you need to seek admission in the arts, commerce, science or vocational stream. The selection of a particular stream will affect the career you choose. 4 After the SSC examination, but before the results are announced, find out about admission procedures, fees and other requirements at the educational institute you intend to join. Once the results are out and marks sheets distributed there is a mad rush and scramble for admissions and in the confusion a student can be misled into the wrong course of study. With so much competition it is not always possible for an average student to get admission into the science or commerce stream. It is wise to have more than one preference. WHAT ELSE? A young person today is required to have not only academic qualifications (degree or diploma certificates) but also a whole set of other skills. Education today is not just book learning but learning from life too. A student needs to develop the ability to communicate and get along with people and the ability to think ahead. A willingness to learn new things, to be open minded, to take on challenges, to be able to withstand pressures are essential qualities and these are sometimes even more important than scoring high marks. Besides working hard at studies, a student has to prepare him/herself for life. Success in a job or career doesn't just happen on its own. 1 Be informed. Read newspapers and magazines regularly. 2 Take part in or listen to intelligent discussions/conversations. 3 Build up self esteem and confidence. To do this, realize your strengths and talents instead of trying to copy or compete with others. Competition has its advantages but it can cause frustration, or bitterness and lower your self esteem.It is better to work towards improving or increasing one's own potentials. 4 Develop your personality. Cultivate hobbies, do fun things with your family and friends, take creative courses like painting, craft-work etc. Take part in sports and games and other extra curricular activities in school. 5 Take care of your physical health and appearance. Height, weight, good eyesight etc. are included in the selection criteria for certain careers, such as defence services or merchant navy. Make a habit of being neat and clean in appearance. 6. Be courteous and pleasant in manner. To conclude, it is important that you set goals and select the right course of study. But remember that mind, body and spirit make up the total person and there has to be development in all three areas. Only then goals can be achieved and you can hope for a happy and successful future. THE ARTS STREAM It is unfortunate that in Goa (and maybe in other States of India) pursuing higher studies in the Arts stream has been given an inferior status. Students with the highest marks seek admission in the Science stream and the second choice is Commerce. Except for a few who opt for Arts as their first choice, many students join the Arts stream only because they fail to get admission in the Science or Commerce streams. But as their studies progress, these students find their attitudes changing and they even begin to enjoy the subjects they previously thought were uninteresting and useless. The subjects offered in the Arts stream such as Languages and their Literature, History, Philosophy, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology and the like cater not only to the physical material world but teach and guide a person to look deeply at life and to understand human nature. A study of the Humanities shapes attitudes and moulds behaviour. It deals with what really matters in life. It inspires one to dream -- to dare -- to reach one's full potential. In the book 'Career Guidance Vol.1', the author Ms Usha Albuquerque, who happens to be of Goan origin but residing in Delhi, states that 'undue importance has been given to the Science subjects under the misconception that Science increases the areas of job opportunities'. Commerce graduates too have a wide choice of careers but this does not mean that there are hardly any jobs for Arts graduates. In fact most jobs call for graduates in any discipline. For these jobs, Arts graduates are on par with Commerce and Science graduates. And very often Arts graduates fare better at interviews and entrance exams because of their communication skills, imagination, creativity, insight into human behaviour and the ability to grasp changing information. An Arts student who possesses these qualities can do extremely well even at sales and marketing which is considered the domain of commerce students. Many BA degree holders excel at competitive exams for the Civil Services, Hotel Management, Business Management,etc. There is absolutely nothing inferior about joining the Arts stream. One may not become a doctor or an engineer, but there are various other fields where Arts students can achieve success and earn high salaries.. There is already so much of existing scientific knowledge and yet so much more to discover. In every nation progress in science is linked to progress in health, economy and the living standards of its people. The benefits of science to humanity is so great that every nation gives utmost importance to the study of sciences in its educational programmes. India is a nation fast developing, forging its future with a unique brand of hot science. Career choices and options in science have never been so complex and exciting. India can produce, and has produced, world class scientists and technologists to cater to the development and needs of the worlds second largest population. There is also a national hunt for talent in science to pick prospective scientists at the budding stage itself. The science stream attracts the cream of students. The best and the brightest will go on to become doctors, engineers, research scientists etc. Every student needs to understand that studying Science is a very different experience from doing Arts or Commerce. A Science student has to be committed. He/she has to use time as effectively as possible,attend compulsory practical sessions in the laboratory, maintain journals etc. The pursuit of Science subjects calls for an interest in scientific phenomena and intellectual curiosity. A willingness to explore, to observe and analyse are the qualities of a true scientist and these will make the study of science more meaningful and fruitful. A student of Science must also be informed about the choice of subjects such as Mathematics and Biology because this will determine his/her future course of study. COMMERCE In recent years there has been a shift in popularity to careers in the finance and management sectors. This has led to a remarkable upsurge in the number of students seeking admission in the Commerce stream. With globalization and liberalization of the Indian economy, the role and importance of commerce graduates has increased considerably. Commercial activity has grown and financial reforms have opened up vast areas of employment. Heavy finances are involved in specialized industries and in international trade and business. So there is an increasing demand for specialists in the field of financial services. Accountancy has grown in popularity as a profession. There are opportunities for financial accounting and tax consultancy in every business organization. Besides accountancy there are other areas of employment which require the knowledge and training that a student of commerce acquires i.e marketing, cost analysis and control, secretarial duties and various other jobs which deal with the effective utilisation of men, money and materials. A B. Com (or any other) degree by itself is no good today unless it is accompanied by an in depth knowledge of a particular field, an analytical mind and certain personal qualities. Whether a degree in Commerce does actually translate into lucrative jobs or not, it is clearly the mantra of the moment. On the recommendation of NCERT, vocational surveys were made and based on these surveys many states including Goa implemented certain vocational courses at the Higher Secondary level.The Vocational stream at the HSSC was introduced recently but it has become an integral part of the Indian education system. Till the mid-20th century people learnt subjects like Humanities, Commerce and Sciences. The aim of education was to make people literate. To some extent it failed to provide employment to students. Universities and colleges were churning out graduates by the thousands, most of whom had not developed any employable skills. There was a demand for skilled manpower but the education acquired by the young people was irrelevant for the jobs. To amend this mismatch and to reduce the aimless pursuit of higher education, Vocational training is given to students who have the aptitude for a particular trade. Vocational education is an organized programme of instruction in the form of work experience leading to employability. The course structure consists of theory and practice relating to the vocational field, related subjects and general foundation studies which includes entrepreneurship Many students who pass the HSSC in the Vocational stream try to find employment or go in for self employment schemes. A few pursue higher studies. The upward mobility of the different vocational courses vary. Students who have done commerce courses can seek admission for the three year BCom degree course. Students who have done HSSC in Horticulture or Floriculture can do the BSc Horticulture or Agriculture course. There are also many students who do BA degree course. But Goa is yet to start a Vocational Degree College, which some other states have.
