GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 30 Aug 2003 COLD-BLOODED MURDER OF LADY IN TIVIM: A 68-yr-old widow, Rukmini alias Kishori Narayan Parsenkar, was brutally murdered on Thursday (28 Aug) night at Canca-Tivim and the assailant made good with her gold ornaments. The lady lived in Muddawaddo, Canca-Tivim, and was alone at home last night. She was bludgeoned to death with a very heavy hammer. The forehead portion of her skull and eye was completely shattered. Neighbours saw that the rear door was ajar and on entering found her lying in a pool of blood on her mat. Police said the assailant entered the house by removing the roof tiles of the kitchen. Normally, the deceased lady lived with her married daughter and her son-in-law Mr Ashok Ramchandra Mayenkar from Mulgaon, Bicholim. But the couple had gone to Mulgaon due to Ganesh celebrations. The lady's other daughter is married in Siolim. (NT)
CITY WELLS CONTAMINATED! All doesn't seem to be well in Panjim as the efforts to tackle the problem of jaundice have received a set back following a discovery that wells in Panjim from where water was supplied to some restaurants and eating houses are contaminated. (H) 4-YR-OLD GIRL RAPED: A four-year old girl, who was accompanying her mother in selling brooms at KTC bus stand In Panjim was mercilessly raped by some unknown person near Income Tax office at Patto Plaza on August 22. The victim, who was profusely bleeding was noticed by some I-T employees who immediately informed the police around 2 p.m. The mother of the victim, who was frantically searching her daughter at the KTC bus stand, was informed about the ghastly incident when she approached the town police station to report missing complaint about her child. (NT) WHY GOAN GULFIES SKIP DIRECT FLIGHTS: The Goan Non-Resident Indians in the Gulf prefer to come via Mumbai rather than fly directly into Goa as they are subjected to a number of inconveniences at the Dabolim airport due to the Customs procedures followed. This point was brought out at a meeting between representatives of the Goan Welfare Society in Kuwait and the Goa NRI Centre, which was attended by the Managing Director of Goa Tourism Development Corporation, Pramod Shetye. According to Wilson Coelho, a member of the Society, when the NRIs come through the Customs at Dabolim, they are made to do both declaration as well as screening, which is not done in other places. (H) GOAN NRIS WANT INSURANCE PACKAGE: Goan NRIs have urged the State government to consider an insurance package on the lines of one provided by the Kerala government. They also suggested that the mediclaim scheme be extended to them. The FRI Facilitation Cell held an interaction with the members of the Kuwait Based Goan Welfare Society in view of the convention of Non-Resident Indians and Non-Resident Goans scheduled in January next year. (GT) OPENING OF BRITISH TOURIST OFFICE: The good news for the stake holders of the tourism industry in Goa is that the inflow of British tourists is likely to go up by almost 40 per cent if the bookings are to be believed. Talking to a group of journalists after inaugurating the new premises of the British Tourist Office at Dempo Towers, Patto Plaza, Panjim, the British Deputy High Commissioner, Western Region, Howard Parkinson said 'vast majority' of the British tourists come by charters. Last year, he said, around 1 lakh British tourists visited Goa. Mr Kamath, who earlier released two books, "Shenoi Goembab: The man and his work" by Dr Kiran Budkuley and "The triumph of Konkani" by Mr S M Borges, observed that there is a pressing need to teach Konkani language to the new generation, including its phonetic and grammatical aspects. "However, one should finalised the syllabus before teaching the same to the young students, as various forms of Konkani language are used in various states, including Goa, Karnataka and Kerala", he pointed out speaking in fluent Konkani prevalent in Canara district. The authorities stated that the incident occurred along the site where safety measure operation was undergoing. The landslide occurred at Kinlem, Babrem village on Goa border. (H) GOVT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 4 STUDENTS: On the eve of the Ganesh Chaturthy the state government yesterday announced Goa Scholarships to four brilliant students for pursuing post-graduate studies aboard and within the country. The names of recipient of the first scholarships for studies aboard are: Mr Neil Rodrigues (Engineering), Ms Gayle Rebello ( Medicine), Mr Ninad Laad (Law). While Mr Bilva Nawthe (IIT, Bombay) has been selected for pursuing studies within India. The government will provide an amount of US $15,000 for each of the candidates as Goa Scholarship for overseas studies. While Rs 2 lakh would be awarded for pursuing studies within India in two installments. (NT) BAG CONTAINING JEWELLERY, CASH STOLEN: An unknown lady wearing a green sari robbed the bag of Assistant Public Prosecutor, Ms Pratima Vernekar, containing jewellery worth Rs 70,000 at the KTC bus stand yesterday afternoon. The APP had gone to reach her servant at the bus stand at around 1.30 p.m. as she was leaving for her native place for Ganesh celebrations. However there was lot of rush and as she was standing in the queue some unknown lady allegedly robbed her bag containing documents, cash and gold jewellery. (NT) ONE HELD FOR CHEATING: The Porvorim police arrested Tony Colin Fred from Arradi, Porvorim and charged him in a cheating case of Rs 9,567. Police said Fred went to the jewellery shop of Mr M M Salkar from Alto-Porvorim on August 27 evening and exchanged his 22 gramme gold finger ring for an 18 gramme 22-carat gold chain. The jewellers also paid Fred Rs 730 as the difference amount. However, the jeweller found out that Fred's finger ring was fake. But Fred walked into their jewellery shop once again yesterday evening, wanting to repeat the transaction with yet another finger ring.
