After a two day shutdown, all restaurants and eating houses in Panjim which have completed a thorough clean-up of their premises and are confident of getting approval from authorities concerned on sanitary measures undertaken by them, are at liberty to commence their routine business from August 29. A decision to this effect was taken today, following a meeting convened by the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and the Health Committee of the Corporation of the City of Panaji.
While initially, it had been decided that a Core Group would inspect each of the eateries in Panjim, particularly the 33 eateries which were compelled to close for want of proper hygiene and sanitation, it has been now decided to carry out random checks from tomorrow.So far nearly a dozen eating houses, from those 33, have already approached the CCP for conducting a re-inspection. Interestingly a number of eateries from the list of 33, commenced regular business on Thursday evening.
A Core Group comprising the Municipal Engineer of the Corporation of the City of Panaji, S S Sardessai, Assistant Drugs Controller of the Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Dr Lawande or a representative of the Panaji Urban Health Centre, PSI Panaji Town Police, Sachin Ambe, Jr Engineer of the Corporation of the City of Panaji, Raut Desai-Sanitary Inspector-CCP, Corporators-Patricia Pinto and Milind Bharne was constituted today. It will commence inspections from tomorrow.
According to the newly constituted Core Group if any hotel or restaurant commences business without complying with the requirements of proper hygiene and sanitation conditions, the same will be sealed and severe action taken immediately. Director of Municipal Administration S P Dixit who is holding additional charge as Commissioner of the Corporation of the City of Panaji today also issued 35 notices to erring hotels and restaurants in Panjim who have been directed to rectify violations in terms of illegal extensions and constructions including improper sanitation at the earliest, failing which action is proposed to be instituted.
In the meantime North Goa Collector S S Keshkamat convened a meeting of all concerned departments, mamlatdars and officials at taluka level to appraise them of the steps to be taken to tackle and control the epidemic of jaundice in North Goa District.Following directions from the State government, Mr Keshkamat is also looking into various aspects of provision of portable drinking water in government offices and a cleanup of all water storage tanks.
He said that regular meetings would be convened to follow up the measures taken and those needed to be taken in the wake of the outbreak of the jaundice epidemic.
Interestingly, though instructions have been issued for immediate removal of gaddas selling 'junk' food and sugarcane, several such outlets continued functioning within the Corporation area and surrounding areas including Porvorim and Calangute. ------------------------------------ HERALD 29/8/03 page 1 -----------------------------------
