Anju Bobby George created history at Paris on Saturday when she became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal, a bronze, at the World Athletics Championships.
I was actually watching this live and was cheering for her. In India I hardly watched any sports, but while I was watching the sports channel with the family of Swedes, as they cheered on their favourite Carolina Kuft, one of them asked me...how come you never ever see an Indian at such events? Is cricket the only game you'll play? I really felt bad and sad about the state of affairs with regards to sports in India and just kept silent. Therefore when Anju Bobby George was on televison, inspite of the Swedish commentary, I was screaming out for her! And in the first round, she jumped the longest distace and was place first! I am so happy to know that she made India proud...at least for the long jumps! Wish we could congragulate her and let her know how happy we are for her! Congratulations Anju!
