On Thursday evening, over 200 agitators from Camurlim and Tuyem villages gathered in the ferry and opposed moves to shift the lone ferry to Siolim. The agitation ended at 7 pm, but by that time the low tide set in and the ferry remained at the Camurlim ferry wharf.
According to sources, the department generally sends an inspector to ensure the shifting of a ferry from one route to another. But on Thursday, no inspector was seen at the Tuyem-Camurlim route. ---------------------------------- HERALD 8/9/03 page 5 --------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Canoe replaces ferry service at Tuyem-Camurlim ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Commuters who were returning in vehicles along the Tuyem-Camurlim route were in for a surprise, when the normal ferry service was replaced with a free canoe service on Monday evening.
The recent ferry row along the Tuyem-Camurlim route took a controversial turn, when the River Navigation Department (RND) suceeded in shifting the lone ferry to Tar-Siolim due to the Ganesh immersion ceremony.
According to reports, a number of commuters employed in government and private establishments, reached the ferry wharf and were taken aback to find that the ferry was taken off the route and had been replaced with a canoe service.
Unable to cross the river, the two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicle owners were forced to take a longer route via the Colvale and Siolim bridges.
"Whenever the RND shifts ferries or suspends ferry service, they should intimate the public through the newspapers in advance. But in this case, the department did not publish any notice in the newspapers regarding the shifting of the Tuyem-Camurlim ferry, neither did it intimate the concerned panchayats," grumbled a commuter.
The row erupted last week, when over 200 agitators from Camurlim and Tuyem villages gathered in the ferry and opposed moves to shift the lone ferry to Siolim, for the Ganesh immersion ceremony.
The agitation ended at 7 pm, but by that time the low tide set in and the ferry remained at the Camurlim ferry wharf. The River Navigation department later issued a memo to Vithal Naik, coxswain of a ferry boat on the Tuyem-Camurlim route, for his failure to shift the ferry to Siolim, despite prior intimation. ---------------------------------- HERALD 9/9/03 page 4 ----------------------------------
