'RED CHILLY TREATMENT': Contrary to the prohibition of corporal punishment to school students, a Panjim-based school has issued a notice to parents in regard to disciplinary measures undertaken by the school, which includes 'red chilly treatment' for offensive behaviour by the students. (H) GMC WARDS INFESTED WITH MOSQUITOES: Despite the State government's efforts to eradicate malaria, the wards in the Goa Medical College hospital continue to be infested with mosquitoes and flies. (NT) FIVE-DAY SCHOOL FROM NEXT YEAR: Full-day school will come into effect from the next academic year and preparations have begun towards improving the infrastructure and other facilities required for the switch-over. It is learnt that a school in Sanquelim has already commenced full-day school and this has been considered as an encouraging sign for the rest to follow. (GT) GOODS WORTH RS.2 CRORE CONFISCATED: In one of the biggest hauls during the year, the Goa Customs on Thursday confiscated electronic goods to the tune of almost Rs.2 crore from a British national (60-year-old Iqbal Siddique), who had come to collect his baggage from the unaccompanied baggage centre located at Mormugao Harbour. The two containers had over 628 packets of transistors, diodes, integrated circuits and other high value electronic items, which the passenger claimed were his used household belongings valued at around 6,000 Euros. (H) SLACK IN SEAFOOD BUSINESS: The seafood merchants have echoed the views expressed by the majority of trawler owners complaining about the poor catch this year. The seafood merchants, who recently elected their panel under the leadership of Mr MM Ibrahim, stated that this year the business is slack. Mr Ibrahim stated that though 95 per cent of the fish catch from major jetties is diverted to other states, they are not able to get the expected price for it. "This time, the catch of mackerels is poor," Ibrahim said. (NT) 'HALF-MARRIED': A couple filed their declaration of intended marriage before the sub-registrar. The mother-in-law ejected Anjali (name changed) along with her four children, but she could not fight for her rights, as the formalities had not been completed. She had no documents to prove the validity of her marriage. (H) ART COLLEGE RAPE ACCUSED TO FACE DNA TEST: The Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court has dismissed the applications filed by the alleged accused Roy Mascarenhas and Vishal Mehta challenging the order of the additional sessions court, which permitted police to take their blood samples for DNA test in connection with the alleged rape of a girl student at Goa College of Art. (NT) BEACH TOURISM IN CALMER WATERS: Several drowning tragedies over the past year have forced the State Tourism department to adopt internationally accepted norms of beach safety. Tourism director N Suryanarayana informed Gomantak Times, yesterday, that at least 30 'safe havens' will be demarcated along the State's more popular beaches. "Very popular beaches such as Baga and Calangute will have two havens each, while less popular ones will have one." (GT) TOURISM TRAFFIC: As the tourism season is drawing near, the State government is expecting air traffic to increase with an estimated increase of domestic passenger arrival from 1.21 lakh to 1.46 lakh. As far as international tourists are concerned, the same is expected to increase from 7,800 to 10,700 passengers per month. As many as 700 charter flights are expected this year. PRIVATISATION OF TWO AIRPORTS: The Union Cabinet yesterday decided to go ahead with the creation of world class airports in Delhi and Mumbai in joint ventures, Civil Aviation Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said in New Delhi. Rudy told reporters that in the joint ventures, 74 per cent of the equity would be held by private partners and the rest by the Airports Authority of India. Air Traffic control and the security in the privatised airports would remain with the government, Rudy said.
