A generous section of beleaguered hoteliers now allege, that a few city corporators are now 'poaching' their brethren.
'Subtley coaxing' them to purchase 'particular' water purifying systems, installation of which has been made compulsory in every eating house. One such flabbergasted hotelier showed this reporter a visiting card bearing the name of corporator of the Corporation of City of Panaji, Milind Bharne.
Scribbled with a pen on the card's rear is the name of the dealer, the brand of the water purifier and the "price" of the product. When asked to comment on the visiting card episode over telephone, corporator Milind Bharne, claimed, that he was on the contrary "helping out" the hoteliers, who were in a quandary. "In fact, a few hoteliers approached me because they wanted some help (vis-a-vis procurment of equipment)," claims Milind Bharne when contacted.
Bharne, incidentally is also on the Core Group, a committee set up by the Corporation to inspect eating houses. He charged, that the allegations made by the hoteliers were a direct fall-out of the various scandalous short-comings which were pointed out by the Core group where he is a member.
"They are out for revenge," he alleged. "I had only advised those hoteliers who approached me," he continued. Hoteliers who refuse to come on record for fear of reprisal, claim that a few others, including a 'pro-change' corporator had also approached them with similar proposals for installations of water-purification systems.
Bharne, who later visited the Herald office to clarify his point, also displayed two brochures of water purifying equipment manufacturing companies namely "Aquaflow" and "Builtec". "The market rate for water purifiers, which can be used by small hoteliers is Rs 5250. The company is willing to concede a concession too," he proclaims. For big hoteliers, he displayed another brochure, advertising another purification system through the reverse osmosis method.
Meanwhile, the Tiswadi branch of the Restaurant and hotel owners association at a meeting held this evening, decided to impress upon the Corporation for a subsidy to install water purifiers and water heaters. -------------------------------- HERALD 12/9/03 page 3 -------------------------------- ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 2252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.goadesc.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy =======================================
