After a long time I had a good opportunity to see a reasonably good Konkani Tiatro on 12th of this month at Hawally Hall, staged, written and directed by Laurent Pereira. The major responsibilities for the success of this Tiatro was shouldered by the visiting artistes namely all the three females such as Annie Quadros, Olga and Jannet and among the males Pascoal Rodrigues and child prodigy Young Chico�s son Jr. Chico. In fact among all the artistes it was Jr. Chico who stole the show and audience was totally satisfied with his superb performance at this tiny age. In him Konkani stage can easily boast of the best child artiste. During those days and in the history of Konkani Stage Master Vaz acted in Tiatro at a very early age and precisely because of this he was then named as Master. Later on the late Aristedes Dias introduced in his masterpiece �Doia� Tiatro a young kid in the name of Bab Lipo whose photographs were cliqued by the Portuguese officials and taken to Portugal and some of these photos were displayed in Lisbon in the Art Galleries by the Portuguese officials when they returned to Portugal after serving their terms. Bab Lipo was not a singer but Jr. Chico is very good singer and the way in his songs he was imitating the seniors such as his father Young Chico, M. Boyer, Alfred Rose and William de Curtorim was really fantastic. After finishing his third and last song many from the audience presented him gifts in the form of Cash Money. For all his three solos he was called back.
In the play the roles done by Pascoal Rodrigues was admirable, he showed his caliber not only of an actor but also as an director; the other role which need appreciation was that of Olga in the Orphanage, her presentation and depiction of the lady in charge of the affairs of Ashram was very meticulous in all respects, her personality gave an added booster for her role; Annie also played her role well as an illegitimate daughter. Among the local artistes Jose Rod played a good role of a rapist, his presentation and way of talking nicely suited his action even though he looked more vulgar in his delivery which was full of words which are not very decent and not palatable to the decent ears. Konkani Tiatro has its own history and tradition which is not surrounded on vulgarity. In the recent past the new cult of tiatrists copying from Hindi Films which are full of vulgarity spoiled the greatness and beauty of Konkani Tiatro. This should be avoided in future to maintain the pristine greatness of our Tiatro. Even the words and statements carrying double meanings are not very attractive to the decent ears. Jannet, comedian Philip and others should take note of this, just because few members of the audience enjoy this such double meaning statements should be discouraged.
Among the songs Pascoal Rodrigues�s in praise of �Khuris� was good, so too of Olga who rendered a nice solo on �Peleacho Mog Korat�; as usual Michael D�Silva did well with his solo on �Soro� while the duo sung by Annie & Olga was very beautiful not only in lyrics but more in vocals. The trio rendered by Marcus�Cajetan & Mario on the death of Dr. Rosario Rodrigues was good but its beauty and essence was destroyed by inducting into it comedian Philip in the garb of late Rosario Rodrigues, comedian Philip was not suited there for such a sorrowful song. The other trio of theirs on Tourist in Goa lacked normal punch, in fact after reintroducing their trio they have already lost the earlier punch and charm in their trio.
The Tiatro was attended by the capacity crowd and the profit of it will go as announced by the organizers for charitable cause back at home in Goa at Utorda, for the Orphanage.
The chief guest for the tiatro was Cajedan Godinho while Guest of Honour Mr. Xavier.
As a whole, the tiatro was liked by the audience, Mike system was good so too musical score and all the actors including those whose names I did not mention above played their roles well.
While concluding I fully disapprove of the comments and shouts made in the section of the crowd when the compere introduced the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour to the audience with some necessary informations. Because of this type of low grade segment of audience, Konkani Tiatro lost much of its greatness. This type of audience spoils the beauty of our Tiatro.
