GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 16 Sep 2003 SC WARNS GOA: The Supreme Court yesterday warned Goa and 13 other states which have defaulted in setting up fast-track courts that they would have to refund the Central grant if they failed to act within six weeks. VENDORS IN NEW COMPLEX: Three-and-a-half months after the city market was inaugurated, around 100 vendors shifted to the new premises on 15 September, temporarily ending the stalemate over the issue. While some vendors started their business, others were in the process of setting up their stalls. (GT) PPA WITH RELIANCE: The Goa cabinet yesterday took an in-principle decision to re-negotiate its power purchase agreement with the lone independent power producer-Reliance Salgaocar Power Company Ltd. The negotiations will centre around reducing the State's liability from the current 24 megawatts (approximately Rs.8 crore per month) to nil, Mr Parrikar said, adding that the government may have to yield some concession to the company as a quid pro quo. (H) SECRETARIAT BLDG, OLD GMC FOR IFFI: The historical Adilshah's Palace (presently housing the Secretariat) along with the old Goa Medical College complex are being planned for various facilities and the offices of the International Film Festival in India and the entire festival would be held around 2-km radius of Panaji city in 2004. (NT) SKY BUS: The government has approved in principal to initiate talks with the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd to explore the possibility of setting up a sky bus as a pilot project. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that on a trial basis the government is keen to set up a sky bus for a distance of about four to five kilometers. (GT) SUNDAY NEWSPAPER FOR GOA: Goa will soon have a new Sunday newspaper, to be brought out by Rajan Narayan, who is said to be planning to leave the popular English daily "O Heraldo" shortly, after having served it for quite a long period. The proposed weekly will be in a broadsheet format, and will be titled "The Independent Goan Observer". FISHERMEN NET BIG CATCH: The government yesterday approved the waiver on some loans granted to fishermen for purchase of fishing equipments between the period 1965-95. In all about 501 beneficiaries had availed of loans amounting to Rs.31,71,900 while the overdue interest was Rs.74,29,500. While some cases for recovery were filed in courts, in certain cases the beneficiaries who had taken loans had died. (GT) TO COMBAT DENGUE: Five patients suffering from dengue fever have been successful treated at the Goa Medical College Hospital during the last fortnight while the health authorities have intensified its drive to combat the disease in Ponda. The health officials said that the dengue fever has rocked Belgaum, Bijapur, and the patients treated at the GMC were mostly migrant labourers from these areas. The cases were detected at Ponda (two) and one each in Cortalim, Baina and Goa Velha. (NT) MAPUSA CONG MAN BOOKED: Twice Congress candidate for the Mapusa constituency, Gurudas Natekar, has been booked by the Economic Offences Cell for cheating. Sources stated that a batch of students, who have complained, had paid Rs.7,500 each towards a 15-day course at Software Technology Group called "Allsmart" run by Mr Natekar at Mapusa. (H) MOBILE EATERIES RETURN: The mobile eateries partially started operating in Margao yesterday. Vendors expect another two to three days for the business to begin picking up. (NT) CCP CONCEDES TO SMALL RESTAURANTS' REQUESTS: Small restaurants in Panjim will receive some respite as the Corporation of the City of Panaji has conceded to requests for leniency and concessions on various aspects. (GT) BURGLARS DECAMP WITH CASH, GOLD ORNAMENTS: In a major daylight burglary, unknown culprits broke into a house at Baga-Velim around Sunday noon and decamped with cash and gold ornament worth around Rs.two lakh. At the time of the incident, the inmates of the house had gone to their relatives at Chinchinim for the feast.
