RS.7.50 CRORE FOR GOA'S POWER SECTOR: The Power Finance Corporation chairman, Mr AA Khan, yesterday presented a cheque of Rs.7.50 crore as part of the first instalment of the total amount of Rs.22.33 crore to the State Power Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, being the amount for the development and improvement of the power sector in Goa. (GT) BEACH SHACK FEES HIKED: the All Goa Shack Owners Association has expressed shock on learning that the licence fees of beach shacks has been hiked exorbitantly from Rs.10,000 to Rs.50,000 and Rs.60,000 by the tourism department. AGSOA president Seby D'Souza said that by raising the fees, the tourism department seeks to make life for the shack owners difficult, pauperise them and eliminate the main source of livelihood thereby depriving the common man of a fair share of the tourism trade in Goa. (GT) ASIAN COMPETITION AT IFFI: The competition for Asian directors is to become an annual feature starting with the 34th International Film Festival of India next month. Renowned Polish filmmaker Krysztoff Zanussi will chair the jury this year. While the festival is expected to be inaugurated by Dy Prime Minister LK Advani, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will also be present. Goa is to be the permanent venue of the IFFI from October next year. (H) GOA PANEL FOR CHINA: A delegation from Goa will participate in the India-China Week to be held in Shanghai and Beijing between 13 and 19 October 2003. (NT) GARBAGE WOES IN COASTAL AREAS: Mandrem Youth Association president Shivkumar Arolkar has demanded that Mandrem and other coastal villages in Pernem, where tourism was a booming, trade, be kept clean by providing necessary equipment and material to deal with the garbage problem in these villages. Mandrem and neighbouring villages like Morjim and Harmal have shopping complexes and their market areas have a semblance of markets in urban areas, said Arolkar, and complained that unlike urban areas market areas in these villages had no facility of garbage collection or are they swept to prevent them from looking shabby. (GT) MODEL STATE IN POWER: The development commissioner and power secretary, Dr Vijay Madan, said the state government believed in supporting the Independent Power Production with whom it has signed the Power Purchase Agreement, even if the modalities of the power production cost change after signing of the agreement. (NT) TIME FOR ROAD DIGGING: The Road Digging Committee has turned down the proposal of the PWD, Sewerage Department, seeking six month's time for digging of the 700-metre road stretch from the PWD building to the Fatorda stadium. Instead, the committee has granted two month's period for the sewerage department to complete the works. (H) PHD FOR JUDITH BRAGANZA: Judith Maria Braganza has been awarded PhD degree in Microbiology by the Goa University for her thesis entitled "Uptake of Arsenic and Cadmium by Halophilic Archea". Her research work has been accepted for presentation at various national and international conferences. She is a lecturer at Dhempe College, Panjim, and is the daughter of Jose Antonio Braganza and Tereza Antao Pereira of Navelim.
