War is closer than you think and it's time we stood up as one to put an end to all strife. To this end journalist Ethel Da Costa is putting together a free concert called the `Daniel Pearl Peace Concert' in remembrance of Daniel Pearl, South Asia Bureau Chief of Wall Street Journal, who was kidnapped and murdered by militants in Pakistan, while sourcing a story. The open air peace concert is scheduled for 10 October, 2003 at the Panjim Municipal Garden from 6 pm until midnight.

This will be the second annual Daniel Pearl Music day on 10 October, which would have been Pearl's 40th birthday, will be celebrated across the world in musical events that call for `Harmony for Humanity.' Goa joins the rest of the world on this day in this free concert to bring a global community for peace together. The one condition the Daniel Pearl Foundation stipulates is that the event be a non-profit one. To this end Ethel Da Costa has brought in musicians and bands from within and outside Goa, who will perform free of charge to make music for all ages. She has also selected five women artists from Goa who will exhibit their paintings at the venue.

Taking the non-profit and harmony theme one step further people are encouraged to bring their own food and drink and share it at the venue with groups around them. While chairs will be provided for the infirm and elderly, those attending are requested to bring mats or sheets to sit on so that the event turns into one huge picnic. No alcoholic beverages or mind-altering substances are allowed at the venue in Panjim. The event is meant to bring the community together in harmony for an evening of great music and togetherness.

As part of its `Together For Panjim' campaign, the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) supports the event and has given the use of the garden and provided infrastructural support, free of charge. Well-wishers have contributed a thousand balloons and schoolchildren from local schools will write messages of peace and harmony and brotherhood of mankind which will be fixed to the balloons and sent up into the evening sky.

Pearl the journalist, was also a violinist, fiddler and mandolin player. He joined a band, orchestra or chamber group in every town in which he lived and formed connections through his passion for music and friendship. Shortly after his death, Daniel's family, friends and supporters formed the Daniel Pearl Foundation to further the ideals that inspired his life and work, and to spotlight his love of music to build bridges and create friendships.

"We are thrilled that leading artists from many musical styles and traditions are joining with us in a clarion call for asserting the oneness of humanity. Danny's determination to spread truth, music, and friendship around the world strengthens our conviction that humanity will triumph and harmony will prevail," says Professor Judea Pearl, father of Daniel Pearl and president of the Daniel Pearl Foundation. "This year in particular, music can help us bridge divisions between cultures. We would like to issue a special invitation to the Arab and Muslim world to join us in harmony for humanity," said Professor Pearl. Goa has answered that call. Everyone is invited.
