RUN-DOWN GOVT SCHOOLS TO GET FACE-LIFT: Thirty-one government primary schools which are in a dilapidated state will get a fresh lease of life within two months as Goa State Infrastructure Development Corpn has embarked on improving their infrastructure. (H) AIRPORT STAFF TO ON HUNGER STRIKE: The airport staff, affiliated to the Airports Authority Employees Union, went on a relay hunger strike on Thursday to protest against the privatization policy of airports in the country. The relay strike will continue upto 25 September and in the absence of a meaningful solution, employees will proceed on a day's mass casual leave on 26 September to register their protests. (GT) POLICE PREVENT BULL-FIGHT: Colva police allegedly prevented a bull-fight that was organised at Calata, Majorda, by some persons yesterday and took into their custody two persons and a buffalo, the police said. (H) PLAYGROUND TURNS INTO DUMP-YARD: It was originally envisaged and planned to be a playground. However, the space adjoining the Government Primary School, Naikwavaddo, in Calangute, has turned into a dump-yard, littered with all sorts of cables, cement pipes, telephone wires, and the panchayat is making full use of the ground as a dump-yard. This is causing inconvenience to the students as they have no other place to play. (H) DECISION ON PALOLEM SHACKS: The Canacona Municipal Council's recent decision to stop allotting places for shacks on Palolem beach this tourism season has been held in abeyance by chairperson Suchana Gaonkar, following protests from a delegation of angry shack owners from Palolem. (H) TIPS ON MOSQUITO REPELLANTS: "Widespread ownership of flats, fridges, TV sets, motorbikes and cars does not mean an increase in living standard. The question that each and every Goan should ask is 'How clean are my surroundings'," said Dr Ashwini Kumar of the Malaria Research Centre, at a seminar organised by the Pomburpa-Olaulim Citizens' Forum. "There is garbage strewn all over the place, Open overhead water tanks, overflowing dustbins. All these make for a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes," Dr Kumar added. (H) IOB ISSUE OVERSUBSCRIBED: The second issue of Indian Overseas Bank was over subscribed 6.5 times. Altogether 4.6 lakh applicants were attracted to the IOB issue consisting of 10 crore equity shares of Rs.10 each. IOB has received applications from 70 crore shares. Nearly 13,000 applications with the collection of Rs.16.16 crore more received in Goa. (GT) KILLING OF BISONS: The World Wide Fund for Nature, India, Goa State Committee, has condemned the mass killings of Indian Bison (Gaur) which is the state animal of Goa. SARBOJININ DURGA PUJA: The Bengali Cultural Association of Panaji and the Goa Banga Samiti of Vasco are two of the Bengali associations in Goa who have announced plans to celebrate the much-venerated Durga Mata. The Bengali Cultural Association under the presidentship of PK Mukherjee and the Durga Puja Committee with Srinivas Dempo as president, have announced its schedule. The Durga Festival in Panaji will be held from 1st to 5th October at Gomantak Maratha Samaj Hall. Calangute's was the last of the four promotional concerts by the superb Goan quartet, who will be recording Joe debut album "Jazzy Joe" for Angel AV. With the haunting strains of the celebrated jazzman's golden saxophone, Konkani mando found itself gilted with glamour. Joe has performed such music and mesmerized audiences worldwide, particularly at the nightclubs in New Orleans. Cartoonist Alexyz presented caricatures to each member of the jazz quarter.
