GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 23 Sep 2003 CHURCH, CONVENT STONED AT MARGAO: St Joseph's Church at Sao Jose de Areal and the Bethany Convent School premises were stoned by some anti-social elements between 9 and 9.30 pm on Sunday (21 September) night. The police are baffled by the stoning of the church and the convent school and the finding of alphabets 'BS' dabbed in blood on a blood-splattered broken plank of the school notice board. Parish Priest, Fr AM Rodrigues, stated that he and his assistant heard the main gate of the church being opened and later the crash of stones on glass and metal at around 9 pm. Later at 9.30 pm, the Bethany Convent sisters, who stay around 200 metres, opposite the church, were shocked to hear the stone hitting the window panes. They found glasses of 14 windows broken. To add to their trauma, they found one of the front window glasses broken and blood splattered around it. (GT)
GRAHAM STEWARD STAINES MURDER CASE: The prime accused Dara Singh was yesterday sentenced to the gallows and 12 others to life imprisonment for the murder of Australian missionary Graham Steward Staines and his sons, Philip and Timothy, on the night of 22 January, 1999, at Manoharpur village in Orissa's Keonjhar district. (UNI report in GT) SHACK OWNERS TO MEET CM OVER HIKE: The meeting of the All Goa Shack Owners Association resolved to take a delegation to the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, to demand a withdrawal of the exorbitant hike in the licence fees of beach shacks for the coming tourism season. The largely attended meeting of the AGSOA held in Panjim yesterday also unanimously resolved to approach all the elected representatives at the Assembly, Zilla Panchayat and Village Panchayat level to demand their support on the various issues faced by the beach shacks. (H) CM RELEASES WHITE PAPER ON EDC: Releasing the White Paper on the Economic Development Corporation yesterday, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced that the government would proceed with "suitable action" against Luizinho Faleiro and any officers "hand-in-glove" with him, for "looting" the EDC between 1995-2000. Addressing the media after releasing the Paper, Parrikar said the matter would be handed over to the CID Crime Branch and if "criminal conspiracy" was established, then the law would take its own course. (H) FINANCIAL AID TO WRITERS, ARTISTS: The Directorate of Art and Culture is implementing the scheme of financial assistance to the persons, who have made valuable contribution in the field of art and culture and whose income does not exceed Rs.25,000 per annum. (NT) FOR NOT FILING REPLY: The Supreme Court yesterday imposed a fine of Rs.15,000 each on ten states including Goa, for not responding to a court's notice on a petition alleging they failed to comply with a 12-year-old order for compulsory education on environment in schools and colleges. Lambasting the states, for not responding to the court's notice, a bench comprising Justice N Santosh Hegde and Justice BP Singh gave them four weeks to deposit the fine amount in the registry and file their responses. (PTI report in GT) WELL WATER TESTING IN MARGAO: From hotels and eateries, the Margao Municipality has now undertaken a head count of the number of drinking water wells in this jurisdiction. The reason: to ascertain the total number of wells in the city and whether they are contaminated with pollutants. So far, the MMC workers have identified over 100-odd wells in the city. (H) DENGUE CASES: With one more case of dengue fever detected on Saturday, the number of dengue cases in the state has risen to seven. As per the new timings the students have to be in the school from 7.50 am to 1.45 pm and this is applicable to all the classes, including the primary section. Some parents opined that at this very tender age, the children are overburdened.
