Several suggestions such as widening the national highway at the Verna junction, laying of road dividers and realignment of the road to bypass the educational institutions near Agnel Ashram were discussed during the Zero Hour in the Legislative Assembly yesterday. STEPS FOR REMOVAL OF "RIVER PRINCESS": The State government is likely to decide on steps to be taken for the removal of grounded "MV River Princess" off Candolim beach within 15 days. This was disclosed by Tourism minister Mickky Pacheco on the floor of the House when this matter was raised by Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes during the Question Hour on September 29. (H) REPAIR WORK OF GOVT SCHOOLS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said that repairs of all 952 government school buildings, throughout the State, would begin from October-November 2003, and the work would be completed by March next year. (NT) SEVEN NEW BILLS: Seven bills were introduced in the State legislative assembly yesterday including: the Goa Public Gambling (Amendment) Bill 2003, the Goa Panchayati Raj (Eight Amendment) Bill, the Goa Employment (Conditions of Service) and Retirement Benefit (Second Amendment) Bill, Goa Tax on Entry of Goods (Second Amendment) Bill, Goa Provision of Water Supply Bill, Goa School Education Bill and Goa Education Development Corporation Bill. (NT) WALK-OUT OVER GOA EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT CORPN BILL: The Opposition members staged a walk-out on the opening day of the four-day Goa Assembly session over what they criticised as the hasty introduction of the Goa Education Development Corp[oration Bill, 2003, for 'rubber-stamping' in the House. (GT) ATTEMPT TO RAPE A CHILD: A 20-year-old labourer, Suresh Basappa Hongiri of Karnataka, has been arrested by the Calangute police on charges of attempting to rape a four-year-old child. (H) CHORAO PANCHAS JOIN BJP: Seven members of the Chodan-Madel village panchayat joined the BJP in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, on Saturday. (GT) TRUCK 'CONQUER' EASTERN BYPASS AT ARLEM: From dumping of garbage and construction debris, the eastern bypass has now become a convenient place for inter-state heavy trucks for parking around at Arlem. What has given a new dimension to the problem is that the activity is posing serious inconvenience to the residents. Says a resident, "Just imagine a situation when around 30 to 40 trucks parked on the bypass without any sanitary facilities." (H) CONSTRUCTION WORK TO BE SUSPENDED: The Goa Centre of Building Association of India has stated that there will be suspension of all construction work in Goa from October 2 to 8 in protest against the unprecedented hike in steel rates. The rate of steel has gone up to Rs.5730 per metric tonne. (H) BODY RETRIEVED FROM RIVULET: The body of an unidentified person was retrieved from a rivulet at Cavelossim yesterday by the Colva police. (H) NAVAL PERSONNEL COMMITS SUICIDE: A 43-year-old naval personnel, Hargovind Singh of MP, committed suicide on Monday evening at INS Hansa, Vasco, by allegedly shooting himself to death. (H) TOURISTS LEAPS TO DEATH: A young foreigner, Laakkonen Esa Peteri, from Finland, committed suicide by leaping off a city building in Panaji yesterday. The reason behind the suicide is not yet known. (GT) REGIONAL PLAN: The executive committee of the Indian Institute of Architects, Goa Chapter, expressed concern over the delay in finalizing the Revised Regional Plan 2011, which is being prepared by the Town and Country Planning Department. (NT) NAKSHATRA UTSAV AT MORJIM: The Kala Academy is organizing a day-long festival of Nakshatra Utsav at Shree Morjai temple, Morjim, Pernem, on October 5, 2003. (NT) DR RATNAKAR ASOLKAR: Born into a poor family of farmers (in Mandrem), where education was a luxury until a few years ago due to poverty, Dr Ratnakar Nakul Asolkar overcame all trials for post-doctoral research by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at San Diego in California, USA, one of the topmost institutes in the world, doing research on the oceans. Dr Asolkar's greatness lies not only in his excellent academic achievements (first at the Goa University and then at the University of Goettingen, West Germany) but also in his simplicity.
