Goan Voice UK Weekly Newsletter - 03 Oct. 2003 issue

I know that most of you are subscribers to the free newsletter service and that
many others check it out regularly on the website, www.goanvoice.org.uk which
is averaging over 3,000 hits a day. However, for the benefit of newer members
of this forum, this is a sample issue. For the web version of this issue,
complete with photographs, graphics and hyperlinks, go to

UK GOAN COMMUNITY NEWS

Warren Noronha's (ex-Nairobi), London Fashion Week show last week was greeted
with the usual accolades. It is impossible to keep up with the media attention
that he attracts but an attempt has been made this week to list some of the
coverage in a supplement which it is hoped to update. You will find biographical
info about him and his family, a video link to an interview with him and catwalk
photographs of some of his shows. There are excerpts from Press reports going
back to 1999 and links to other sites and even to Emma Bunton and Victoria
Beckham! It has been a busy week for me - to find out why, see:

Cliff Pereira has launched his profusely illustrated narrative on the Goans in
the Port of London. He examines the evidence of Goans in Deptford in the 18th
century and finishes with look at the Goan Community of London today. There are
sections on A maritime culture; The priest and the company; The Goans of Bombay;
Lascars in the East End; Colonial clerks; The exodus. There is also a Konkani
translation of the full text. A riveting read in any language! Check it out at:

unspoilt Indian paradise...When driving in India you need good brakes, a good

28 Sep. The Sunday Times. Analysis of 15 of the world's hottest winter sun
spots. Goa: Despite having morphed from hippie hang-out to mass-market resort,
Goa retains much of its charm. There are dozens of beach-shack restaurants where
you can dine on lobster or fish curry for a few quid. The clubbing scene is
warming up, and the sunsets are among the world's best. There are drawbacks: the
five-star hotels aren't quite up to international standards, and some resorts,
including Baga, Calangute and Candolim, have been wrecked by unchecked
development. Bonus points? Plus 3 for the food, low prices and sunsets; minus 5
for overenthusiastic use of concrete. See:

several other places like East Africa were able to maintain their heritage and
culture after several generations.
