In a press release, the Saad has remarked that on the one hand, women's issues are not a priority with the government and on the other hand, women's concerns are given a go-by so much so that the proposed amendments to the Goa Public Gambling (Prevention) Act have not taken into account a long-pending demand of women to repeal the earlier amendments permitting casinos in five-star hotels and off-shore.
In a representation to the Chief Minister, the Saad has stated that the term of the last commission expired on September 4, 2003, and till date the same has not be reconstituted, causing further misery to the women who had sought assistance.The Saad has pointed out that cases which were negotiated and were at the verge of settlement have got stuck and that not even emergency cases were also not attended causing further distress and trauma to the victim. The Saad has remarked that this smacked of inefficiency of the government in carrying out its statutory duties.
In its press note, the Saad has also drawn attention to the sham of introducing legislation making punishment for gambling stringent even as casino gambling is allowed to flourish and there are big hoardings promoting the same. The Saad has said that hundreds of women have time and again raised this demand at several meetings and the government is duty bound to heed the demands of the women and not of those of the casino industry and the casino gamblers. ------------------------------------ HERALD 3/10/03 page 4 ------------------------------------
