RS.25 CR TO BEAUTIFY PANAJI: The capital city will get a bridal look with
the State government having decided to allocate Rs.25 crore for the
beautification of Panaji in a bid to prepare it for hosting the
International Film Festival of India in December 2004. The government will
constitute an ad-hoc committee today for the infra-structure development in
connection with the IFFI. (GT)

SUPPORT FOR ROMAN SCRIPT KONKANI: Speaking at the 70th anniversary function
of "Vavraddeancho Ixtt" on October 4, at Pilar, Pundalik Naik, the president
of the Goa Konkani Academy (GKA), that plans to extend GKA support to Roman
script Konkani publications have been worked out and that every effort would
be made to support Devnagri as well as Roman script for the development of
Konkani. Fr Peter Raposo, the editor, said that "Vauraddeancho Ixtt",
thrived to cater to the simple folk and will continue to do so. A library in
journalism and Konkani and the inclusion of Devnagri in the weekly were
among the future plans of the periodical. (GT)

BENGALI AMBIENCE IN MARGAO: Amidst beats of dhaki (a musical instrument),
fragrance of Bengali food and perfect setting of Bengali culture, with
hundreds of Bengalis moving around in their traditional attire, the Durga
puja pandal resembled like a mini West Bengal during the five days of puja
at Aquem, Margao. Margao's Sarvajanik Durgotsav Samiti put in its best
efforts to provide perfect Bengali ambience. (NT)

'TAKE ON MORE RESPONSIBILITIES': Caught in the midst of a rapid social
change, and growing expectations of an activist Church that's more relevant
to contemporary needs, Christians and others stressed the need for religion
to take on new responsibilities and more enlightened attitudes. Repeated
calls came up for the Church to become more sensitive to contemporary
problems, link up with well-intentioned others regardless of religion, and
extend its activities in new spheres, at a two-day conference of the 'Church
in the Evolving Society of Goa'. (H)

GOVT TO HIKE BUS FARES: The State government has at last agreed to finalise
the hike in bus fares in the State as a meeting of all the concerned
authorities has been convened today evening. (GT)

SPECIAL PROGRAMME FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS: The State government has plans to
work out a specialised programme for teachers who have completed over 15
years of teaching in primary schools. The academicians felt the need for
such a programme to the teachers, who otherwise are teaching the same old
syllabus. This was hinted at by the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar,
while replying to a resolution on appointment of qualified DED teachers to
the primary schools, in the State legislative Assembly. (NT)

FINANCIAL AID TO SPECIAL STUDENTS: About 1,000 special children in the State
will get additional educational support from the government with the
implementation of a new scheme shortly. The educational support scheme for
mentally and physically challenged students in Goa was earlier announced by
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in his budget speech. (GT)

TRAFFIC WARDEN SCHEME: The spectacular growth in vehicular traffic in Goa
has witnessed rise in road accidents, traffic congestion and environmental
deterioration and to alleviate the situation so as to have safe, smooth and
efficient traffic management and road safety, the traffic police have
started Traffic Warden, a citizens' voluntary force in Goa. The traffic
police chief, Mr Appa K Teli, stated that the basic idea of the scheme is to
give scope for the concerned citizens to participate in day-to-day traffic
regulation and traffic management. (NT)

'QUIT AS MLA': The Navelim Constituency BJP Mandal has demanded the
resignation of GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro as MLA for the economic ills
of the Economic Development Corporation and to come clean by contesting the
bye-polls. The Navelim Constituency BJP Mandal president, Shaikh Jina,
challenged Faleiro to resign as MLA following the release of the 'white
paper' by the State government. (H)

RESTRICTED WATER SUPPLY: There will be restricted water supply to entire
Bardez taluka today and tomorrow due to the sudden breakdown at the pumping
station at Assonora water works, according to the PWD. (GT)

JAZZ CONCERT IN MARGAO: Gomant Vidya Niketan, Margao, in collaboration with
the American Centre, Mumbai, will organise a concert by "Jazz Ambassadors -
Bryant and Kaleidoscope" at the GVN auditorium on October 15 at 7.30 pm. The
quarter will present Latin Jazz and comprises of Freddie Bryant on guitar,
Andrew Eulau, bass, Tom Aalfs, violin, and Willard Dyson on drums. (H)
