GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 09 Oct 2003 TWO DROWN OFF BAGA BEACH: With barely 24 hours having passed after four drowning deaths occurred at Colva and one at Calangute on Tuesday, two more tourists met with a watery grave off Baga beach yesterday. Ayyaraj Ramanna (25) and Ravi J Gadwa (26), both from Bangalore, got drowned while one Navinkumar was saved by the lifeguards. While their colleagues were relaxing on the beach, the trio went for a swim and got caught in the under currents. (GT)
GOVT FOR SECURITY, SAFETY OF TOURISTS: The government will lay stress on the safety, security and comfort of tourists in the future, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said while speaking as the chief guest at the concluding function of the three-day Tourism Meet at Dona Paula yesterday. He preferred a destination for tourists which is safe, and even children should feel secure, he said. The number of tourists is expected to touch the 20-lakh mark soon and is likely to exceed 30 lakh next year and the government will spend about Rs.50 crore on this sector directly and indirectly this year, Parrikar said. (GT) 'PULL UP YOUR SOCKS': Stop lobbying for sops. Instead pull up your socks and work to make Goa a destination that is safe. Referring to Tuesday's tragedy at Colva, Mr Parrikar said it doesn't just suffice to promote Goa as a destination and host tourists by the hordes. "Once we have them here, it is the responsibility of all of us to ensure that their stay is safe, secure and comfortable," he said. (H) SHACK OWNERS WANT 'SAY' IN BEACH MANAGEMENT: The shack owners must be consulted and involved by the Tourism Department in the management of the beaches with regard to safety, cleanliness and garbage disposal and the number of shack licences issued last year should be retained without any reduction this year, were the unanimous resolutions passed at the meeting of the All Goa Shack Owners Association held in Panjim to discuss various issues pertaining to the forthcoming season. (H) MOTORCYCLE RIDER KILLED IN MISHAP: Francis Joao Noronha, a 28-year-old motorcycle rider, lost his life while the pillion rider, Piedade A Fernandes (46) was admitted to Goa Medical College with injuries when a truck collided against their vehicle at Loutulim. Francis and Piedade hail from Fatorda. (GT) DEAD PERSON'S ATM CARD USED: Unknown culprits encashed Rs.91,000 from the bank account of late Govind Khorate using the deceased ATM card. On the very day Khurate, of Panjim, expired on August 25, the first withdrawal was listed on the bank's electronic ledger.
