2-KM SKY-BUS LAB FOR MARGAO: A two-kilometer long facility for the proposed Sky Bus Metro, the dream project of the Konkan Railway Corporation, will be set up in Margao at a cost of Rs.70 crore. The cost will be shared by the Goa government and the Konkan Railway Corporation. Only after the tests are conducted successfully and its gets an approval from the railway safety board, then the project will be implemented on a commercial basis between Panjim and Mapusa. (H)

FATE OF BULLET RAIN UNKNOWN: While the prototype of Sky Bus Metro will be finally unveiled to the nation next week, the fate of the country’s first bullet train is still unclear. Senior KRC officials maintained that the high speed train has undergone some successful tests around December last year. The proposal for introducing the train between Margao and Mumbai, which is expected to run at 150 kmph, is presently lying with the Railway Ministry. (H)

DOUBTS OVER UNCHECKED WATER SOURCES: The finding that almost all the wells in the city of Panaji are polluted, after tests were done to examine their water quality, raises questions about the safety of other unchecked sources being used by several families in the city. The questions may open the Pandora’s box as authorities have not seriously considered this aspect and the likely harm consumption of this water may cause to the citizens. (GT)

MODERN BRIDGES FOR KHAREBAND: The long pending demand for modern bridges at Khareband, Mungul and Rawanfond in Margao, will be fulfilled soon, with tenders for these bridges being floated by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, yesterday. The estimated cost of the three bridges is Rs.5.61 crore. (GT)

LIFER FOR ANMOD GHAT MURDER ACCUSED: Sessions court in Margao yesterday sentenced two accused, Suresh Nayar and Wilson Fernandes, to life imprisonment for murder and attempt to murder of Vinit Bindal and Maruti Jadhav at Anmod Ghat in 1998. On 29 March 1998, accused Suresh—former driver of Bindal--, Wilson and Videsh Malwankar traveling in a Sumo, stopped the vehicle of Bindal on the pretext of seeking mechanical help. Maruti, who was driving Bindal’s vehicle was seriously stabbed. Sensing danger Bindal, proprietor of a superstore in Panaji, fled into the jungles. However, the three accused chased him and stabbed him to death. (GT)

S GOA JOURNOS MEET: The South Goa Journalists Association, which met in Margao on Wednesday, has called upon Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to immediately withdraw the notices of defamation served on a section of the press. The meeting, which was chaired by Sushant Kuncolienkar, also made a call to the press to come and join together and fight all moves to impose censorship. (H)

ADVANCED FACILITIES FOR FISHING JETTIES: Fishing jetties in Goa are proposed to be developed on the lines of advanced Vishakapatanam jetties. The Vishakapatanam jetties have been construction as per European Union norms on safety, sanitary conditions and hygiene. (H)

FUND TO ENCOURAGE BUDDING ARTISTES: The chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, assured to have a fund specially for encouraging budding artistes in the near future. This assurance was given while congratulating the ‘Kala Ankur’ team for achieving phenomenal success at the national level drama contest held in Delhi. (NT)

‘THE LION KING’ IS COMING: Walt Disney Pictures’ “The Lion King” will be available on Disney DVD and CVD in the State from 14 October, on the occasion of its simultaneous launching in Asia. Rock and Raaga Entertainment Private Ltd, Panaji, has been appointed the sole distributors for the Goa region. (GT)

CAMPAIGN AGAINST NARKASUR EFFIGIES: Sanathan Sanstha, a NGO dedicated to sectarian amity, social upliftment, national security and rekindling dharma, has submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, South Goa, on the follow up of implementation of the points agreed at the meeting with the District Magistrate last October, to discuss the after effect of burning of Narkasur effigies. The organisation has taken the lead to campaign against malpractices during celebration of religious festivals. (GT)

TELEPHONE CABLES DAMAGED AT COLVALE: Some unknown persons caused damage to the telephone cables which were dug out for repairs near Vailankanni Garage, Colvale, causing loss to the government property to the tune of Rs.10,900. (NT)

KONKANI SCHOOL ON DECLINE: The Nationalist Congress Party has demanded that the government spell out the reality of the education policy being implemented vis-à-vis Goa Official Language Act and warned that the number of Konkani medium schools were on a downslide, as some officials with vested interests subtly making efforts to promote Marathi. ART EXHIBITION: The inauguration of the 76th All India Art Exhibition 2003, organised by the Kala Academy and All India Fine Art and Craft Society, New Delhi, will be held today at the Kala Academy’s Art Gallery at 5.30 pm. The exhibition will be on view from 11 to 16 October, between 10 am and 7 pm. (GT)

SADHVI AT BOOGIE WOOGIE: Sadhvi Chandan Nayak, 11, in her brilliant performance at different levels of selection for the mega-finals of “Boogie Woogie”, a popular programme of dance on Sony Television Channel, has earned her name and fame to be the only artiste from Goa to qualify for the mega-finals of the show. Sadhvi is a Std VII student at Mahila and Nutan High School, Margao. (GT)
