Dear Goanetters, [This was meant to be an early-bird report on Friday night. Sancharnet denied me access till Saturday noon. I got through to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but the 'Rich Text ' format option that remained in default on my outlook express prevented it from getting it to you. Haste maketh waste,it seems. The details may still make sense, hence the re-post. ]
The Daniel Pearl Peace Concert organized by Ethel da Costa for the Times of India under the TFP Bandstand series was a resounding success. This report does not have all the details. I entered in while one fusion orchestra was winding up and "Mabel and the Anibal Quartet" was getting set to play some real good jazz...sliding trombone and all! Mabel sang a modified version of Jim Reeves hit song "Danny Boy" in honour of the Waal Street Journalist who was done to death by terrorists in Pakistan. The "Music Company" consisting of Nini [Noel de Souza,Britto's batch of 1972 and Director of the deSouza Group of Companies including TransOrient,Sunvillage, etc],Alex Braganza[ Britto's batch of 1976 and bass guitarist of 'The Band' besides Broadway Advertising] and Marino D'Souza[St.Thomas,Aldona, batch of 1977 ,drummer of 'Forefront' and ITI lecturer] set the evening on fire with "Country Road", "Lying Eyes" and two meddleys including one of Beatles. The audience came alive..singing along and tapping their feet or swaying to the beat. When they ended it was a case of 'Yeh Dil Maange More!' The "Soggy Biscuits" let it rip with rock music. On the vocals was Rahul Alvares, who is generally associated with creepy and crawly creatures like snakes and crocs and is the author of two books on such subjects. One book of his one year experiment between SSC and HSSC is appropriately entitled "Away From School". But tonight it was rock! The show was ably compered by Richard Dias [of Radio Active fame] and Sigmund de Sousa[of Goa Messenger amongst other things]. Sanjit Rodrigues,Patricia Pinto,Remo Fernandes,August Braganza,Collin Curry,Raya Sankhwalkar,Jason,Sylvia and others could be seen in the audience.
