Today, Dr. Jose Colaco, a Goan Paediatrics Consultant settled in Nassau, The Bahamas, posed a few questions to me on my recent mails on Rajan Narayan. One of Dr. Colaco's questions was very pertinent and made me tell why (as some fellow-Goans have felt) I am *after* Rajan Narayan. Actually, I'm not *after* anybody. It's just that I am deeply concerned that this man - for entirely selfish reasons - may unwittingly spark off the powder keg to what has been referred to as Goa's *centuries-old communal harmony.*
If you have any affection for Goa and have liked the way Goans, from varied religious denominations and social backgrounds, have generally lived in peace with each other, read on... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dr. José Colaço" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, October 13, 2003 6:08 AM Subject: Re:Valmiki's observations IGO (6) > Dear Valmiki, ...............(foregoing portions omitted -Valmiki)...................... > If we do, and he is upfront - Let's support him and his venture. My brief first-hand experience, hearsay and perception, tell me that he is anything but that! If you can call the Navhind Times former editor, KSK Menon, an *opportunist*, I wonder what word from the English vocabulary you would chose to describe this wily master manipulator and liar who will have no compunction whatsoever to distort or withhold facts to suit his purposes! But I'm glad you perceived the difference between the two monsters. Which brings me to the very disturbing reason why I decided to write about this man 20 years after we parted ways (for details, pls read my article, *oHERALDo: an untold chapter* in the e-book, *Behind The News: Voices From Goa's Press* freely downloadable at http://www.mediaah.com/Mediaah!DownloadManager.htm Just one serious thought here: what if the One Monster (IGO), in its campaign to drum up reader and financial support from Goan *Cristaos* and NRIs, does in fact spark off the other monster (communalism)? Blatantly misusing the editorial columns of the oHERALDo before he took ill last Tuesday, as we are told, Rajan wrote particularly virulent and communally PROVOCATIVE anti-Hindutva/pro-Church editorials with all kinds of exhortations to the minority *Cristaos.* I remember one particular editorial (posted by Frederick Noronha on Goanet, or was it Goajourno?) which I alluded to yesterday in my mail, *Rajan, the manipulator...* There are, at present, no overt communal ill-feelings in Goa. Despite the BJP Government, if you will. Things are peaceful in Goa. And yet, here comes a man who through his writings, in fact is doing - maybe unwittingly - his level best to stir up communal passions and sensibilities. To what gain? Only to garner support, financial and readership, of Goan *Cristaos* and NRIs, for his selfish, no-other-option-after-HERALD-resignation: Rajan's *Independent Goan Observer* (IGO) !! Just like how you feel strongly about the minorities, remember there are people who also feel strongly about the majority community. What Rajan is right now doing is sowing DANGEROUS portends for the well-being of Goa. He understands the Goan mindset well. He knows the Goan *Cristaos* are generally DK (Dukhor Khaire), meaning pig-brained. Whatever his assumptions, are we, as educated, sensitive and informed individuals going to allow, promote, finance and encourage this selfish skunk to disturb - and heaven forbid, someday destroy - Goa's communal peace? THIS is what disturbs me. This is what I wish every sensible Goan will ponder over.
