------------------------------- Control Liquor Shops ------------------------------- Liquor shops, popularly known as 'taverns' have been prescribed certain timings by the concerned authorities to carry their business. However, it is rather surprising to note that the taverns are opened and closed solely at the whims and fancies of the owners.
Small liquor shops in Panjim, Ponda and Margao municipal markets open as early as 7.30 am. The labourers get attracted to these shops and hence the owners grab the opportunity of earning more money in the early hours of the day.
At night also, the shops remain open till late hours. Youths today have been indulging in various vices, including consumption of alchoholic drinks. They are accustomed of sitting with their friends till late hours, having the drinks.
In view of harmful effects on their health as well as future, there arises a need for the control on the liquor shops and see to it that the owners adhere timings marked for opening and closure of their shops. The defaulters should be penalised accordingly. Also adulteration, has to be checked.
Since we do believe that health is wealth, hope the concerned authorities safeguard the health of Goan community.
