--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ten more structures declared as protected monuments ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ten more ancient and historical sites in the State have been brought under the protective shield of the Goa, Daman and Diu Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1978 with effect from October 16, 2003.
These include the Fort of Reis Magos at Verem, the Fortress of Khorjuve at Aldona, the Cave of Sidhanath at Surla, the Mosque and Tank at Tar Surla, the British Cemetery at Dona Paula, the Fortress of St Estevam, the Fort at Marmagoa, the site of Kaivailya Math at Consua-Cortalim, the Cave at Shigao-Sanguem and the site of Narayandev at Vichundra in Sanguem.
It may be recalled that a notification had been issued by the Department of Archives and Archaeology in July last year proposing to protect 12 monuments and sites, and had sought for objections from the general public.
However objections were received on the proposal to protect two sites namely Fort Aguada and the Curca Fountain which have been dropped from the final notification issued on October 16, 2003.
According to official sources, the Department of Tourism has put forth a proposal to develop and maintain the Fountain at Curca, while the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is in the process of demarcating the boundaries at the Aguada Fort by which ASI would maintain the upper portion of the Fort. The lower portion of the Fort which includes the Aguada Jail, after demarcations, is proposed to be handed over to the State for maintenance under the Archaeological Act of 1978. As such the lower portion of Aguada Fort is expected to be included in the list of protected sites at a later stage.
With the inclusion of 10 more sites and remains under the Act, a total of 52 sites and remains of archaeological importance are now protected and to be maintained by the State government through the Department of Archives and Archaeology.
From the ten new sites included in the Act, the State government is in ownership of six of the sites namely the Fort of Reis Magos, the Khorjuve Fortress, the Cave at Sidhnath, the site of Fortress at St Estevam, the Fort of Mormugao and the site of Kaivailya Math at Consua.
According to information available, the Fort of Reis Magos was sought to be included for protection under the Act way back in 1983. The plan was however abandoned and till recently negotiations to hand it over to a private party also failed. As such the fort has now been included in the list for protected sites and sought to be conserved and maintained.
Presently, the Department of Archives and Archaeology is carrying out the conservation of the mosque and tank at Tar Surla and will thereafter throw open this site as a tourist spot. It is learnt that renowned architect K D Sadhale has been entrusted with the task of conservation of rock carving sites and some others.
A Rs 1 crore budgetary provision has already been made by the State government for undertaking the conservation, maintenance and development of the ancient monuments, sites and remains. The notification declaring the ten new sites as protected under the Act was issued by Director of Archives and Archaeology M L Dicholkar. ----------------------------------- HERALD 19/10/03 page 4 ----------------------------------- ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 2252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.goadesc.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy =======================================
