Dear Goanetters,

"Greatness of Alfred Rose" is a nice article written by A. Veronica on Alfred Rose,
the man with the golden voice who has left us
for his heavenly abode on 21st of this month. In his death, the Konkani stage has
lost one of its pearls. Mr. A. Veronica is absolutely right to say that he was the
first man to introduce "Kantarancho jhelo" with lyrics of his songs. He was also the
first man to introduce the Konkani audio cassettes with his wife Rita Rose. And here
again he was the first man to go to UK and other parts of the world world with his
shows. His songs were really good especially the old ones. Here are some of his
songs which I still remember. Although he is no more with us he will always be
remembered in his songs.

These are the songs I had learnt as a child. Somehow I fell in love with the lovely
tunes and the way he used to sing them with his
melodious voice. The impact is so much that these songs are still fresh in my mind.
I remember singing these songs for party's or
for picnics. Here are some of his old hits.

1) Mandovi, Mandovi,
        Thondd varem Mandovichem,
        Thuim sobitt cheddum deklem
        Perturbar zaun roddttalem
        Ankvar babddem urlelem
        Te dhotik vilaptalem
        Kaliz mojem churchurlem
        Kazarachem utor dilem
                Gloria......oh Gloria tum mojem

2) Uzvadd koxem ailem, uzvadd koxem ghelem
        Niz ostorechem niallop dakoilem
        Sobitt ful abolem, dolleancher dipkoulem
        Zoglaunnem marun hem kaliz aloilem
                Kampala, Kampala, Kampala,
                Thuim meulem maka ek Cinderella
Sobitt dhalea, oi hea mouba talla,
                Meulem Kampala, Kampala, Kampala.

I believe these above two songs have been translated and sung in English too.

His other hit solos are:

Deu nidonk nam, khoro ixtt, kalchi koddi, teg foler artinche, ontrollar tarvam, pain
korunk nam poi tem, Bahrainkaranchem lisaum, gupit mog, Juliana, xamaimchem volter,
etc. He had sung very few duos with others like "Geetar xinkoi", with Bab Peter,
"Cheddeachem baltim" with Rico Rod, "Munis chondriman" and "Podhon anink filhead" with
Tony Call.

Before meeting Rita Rose, I think he used to sing with other females such as his duets
with Carmen Rose.

2) Kitem tum sang maim, kitem tum sang maim, tujem aum aikonam
Pai assa tarvar, choloita monvar, kazar aum zauchonam
Aik puta ek utor, fuddarar mar nodor,
Kazar zaunk tum fuddem sor, tem sambautelem tujem ghor.

3) This duet was followed by another duet named "Dotor anink nurse" which goes
like this.....

Dotor, dotor, dotor maka kitem zata,
Sambau dotor, sambau dotor gunvoll eta,
        Raugo matxe, raugo matxe .......

3) The duet with Anthonette

        Roddunaka, roddunaka mogachea Kamla
Prem tughelo, prem maghelo, kalzan ghott rombla
Nokri maka zali Kamla, vetam aum Simla
(sorry, for I cannot recollect the fourth line........)

        Fottoilem Deva, maka sap fottoilem
Lognank voros zaunk nam, eksurponnan bosoilem

(Other duets with Anthonette are Saukaralo por, chander vati & many others)

4) The duet with Luiza de Saligao (Goemchem Lata Mangueshkar)

Vokol koxi dista aii, chean baba chean
Dollean nakan, koxi aii, niumli magheli tan

Angak tinnem ghaltoch tambddi tambddi saddi
Nodor ghalteleachi aii, zata taddi middi
Puro puro baba puro puro, tunch mozo baba fulancho turo

(This duet was followed by another duet named "Europkar" sung by Alfred Rose
and Luiza de Saligao)

5) The duet with his wife Rita Rose

        Sobitt fulam vinkunk vetam bazaran
Ek cholo sodanch eta, fulam vinktim gheta
        Sundor dista rupan
                Khuim gheli ghe ti fulvali,
                Kiteak uxir tuka zali,
Polle, polle, vell anink lainaka, fulam tum dhi maka
                Rauta magheli choli.
Moje choliek sodanch aum fulani bortam
                Borim-borim tuje laghchim fulam vortam
Ekttich moji devi mhun tichi pooja kortam
Tujea oslo zanvuim meulear puro mhun aum magtam

(Other duets with Rita Rose are: Oi maka zai toslem, Kantteanchem dennem, ie
Johny ie, sopnant distolom, etc.)

During the Christmas time, one cannot forget his song NATALANCHI BHETT when the whole
world is in Christmas mood. And
how can one forget the special Christmas song that is sung by Rita, Alfred & chorus.

                                           Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
                                           Khuxealbhorit natalam,
                                           Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas,
                                           Khoxechim fuleant fulam
                                           Soglo sounsar, zala khuxeal
                                           Kherit neketr udelam,
Natalanchea disa, sogott zai toxe nacha
                                           Anvuim poi nachonk axelam.'

6) Then there is this song GHELEM BABA GHELEM (on old & new year) which somewhat
goes like this.........

                                           Ghelem baba ghelem, khuimcheanuch ghelem
                                           Novem aslem pornem zaun ghelem
                                           Amchem modem ravon zaitench tannem
kelem......

"Love in Goa" starring Anuradha Patel and Mayur as the hero and heroine is the Hindi
film he has rendered his voice. The song
was "Come on sing" which was picturised on Jagdeep dancing in a party fully
intoxicated.

Now he is no more with us but his songs will always remain with us. This reminds me
of his song that he sang in the Konkani
film "BHOGLANTT" - Sounsara, fottkirea sounsara,
                         Hai sounsara, motlobi sounsara

Konnank ansoitai, konnak roddoitai, dolle ugdde korun
poi........

May his soul rest in peace.

Regards,

Cypriano (Riyadh, K. S. A.)
