GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 25-26 Oct 2003 ARCHBISHOP LAYS STRESS ON ROLE OF LAITY IN EDUCATION: The Archbishop Patriarch, Rev Raul Gonsalves inaugurated the 5-day 37th National Convention of the All India Association of Catholic Schools, at Don Bosco's High School, Panaji, on October 25. In his inaugural address to the over 500-strong audience, Archbishop Gonsalves laid importance on the participation of the laity. He encouraged both the lay and consecrated people in their mission of education saying that it requires the courage of testimony and the patience of dialogue as the teachers work to bring about a communion of communities. 'LAITY CAN COMPENSATE': An increasingly smaller number of consecrated persons are getting involved in the educational field each year, dropping from around 50 per cent four decades ago to around 10 per cent in the year 2000. While talking at the XXXVII national convention of the All India Association of Catholic Schools, Dr PS Zacharias, Vice Chancellor of the Goa University, said, "The decreasing number of consecrated persons in education can be compensated only by the 'laity' ". (H) COPS POUR COLD WATER ON FIREWORKS: An array of fireworks display was stopped by the Panaji police when two persons including a minor girl were injured at Taleigao grounds on Friday late evening. The fireworks display was organised by Town and Country Planning Minister Babush Monserrate, on the occasion of Diwali celebrations. (H) 70-YEAR-OLD WOMAN ROBBED: A gang of four robbers caught hold of Inacinha Fernandes, a 70-year-old woman from Sheller-Canacona, on Friday and snatched gold ornaments worth Rs.52,000 from her. The group had approached her for a rented room. Presuming them to be in genuine need, Inacinha had allotted a room to them. (H) POROBO RE-APPOINTED AS G A T PRESIDENT: Zoivonta Esvonta Porobo has been re-appointed by the state Government to the post of the president of Goa Administrative Tribunal. Porobo had resigned as president of GAT after the Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court on September 19, 2002, quashed and set aside his appointment on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Adv Aires Rodrigues. Adv Rodrigues has decided to challenge the re-appointment "in the interests of independence of the Judiciary". (H) GOVT TO HONOUR ALFRED ROSE: The Goa government will posthumously honour Alfred Rose, who passed away on Tuesday, for his contribution to the Konkani stage, on December 19 this year. This was announced by Konkani Sangeet and Natak Academy's managing trustee, Tomazinho Cardozo, at a meeting held at TB Cunha, Panjim, on October 25, to condole the death of Alfred Rose. (H) BEAUTIFICATION OF GARDEN RUNS INTO ROUGH WEATHER: Five years after an agreement was entered into with a private party for the beautification of the Margao Municipal garden, the Margao Municipal Council has served a notice asking the contractor to show cause why the agreement should not be terminated for alleged "multiple and several breaches" of the contract. Cashew exports were to the tune of 1,27,227 tonnes valued at Rs.2,014.77 crore against the target of one lakh tones. The major chunk of cashew exports was to the United States. Brazil and Vietnam have merged as strong competitors in the global cashew market.
