GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 29 Oct 2003 MOVE TO CURB ILLEGAL PRACTICE BY DOCTORS: In a bid to prohibit practice by medical practitioners with dubious credentials, the state government will shortly issue and ordinance making it mandatory on the part of all doctors to register themselves with the Goa State Medical Council. What the government seems to be considering is to target doctors from outside the State, who issue advertisements in local dailies making tall claims and operate from some city-based hotels. (GT)
'HERITAGE STRUCTURES TO GET FACE-LIFT': The inspiration may have come from Cannes, but Panjim, the venue for Goa International Film Festival, will be no French city, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar indicated yesterday. Addressing a press conference, Mr Parrikar said the emphasis would be on upgrading and improving the city's civic and other infrastructure rather than building huge projects that will be white elephants. The government, he said, has also decided to refurbish heritage buildings in Panjim as a preliminary move for the upcoming IFFI. (H) GLOBALISATION, A TWO-WAY CHALLENGE: Can educational institutions in India gear up to face the challenge posed by the entry of their foreign counterparts. And conversely, can they export their expertise abroad? The impact of globalization in education, its commercialization and decline in values were three major areas which were discussed by a panel of experts at the concluding session of the 37th annual Convention of All India Association of Catholic Schools, at Don Bosco Oratory, Panaji, yesterday. (GT) SOCIETY FOUNDED ON PEACE, JUSTICE: The All India Association of Catholic Schools promised to strive to lead to maturity citizens who are committed to peaceful and constructive co-existence of all, irrespective of culture, gender, creed or caste. The convention, acknowledging their responsibility towards the youth, also promised to "walk along with the young as we together try to build a society founded on peace and justice". The Margao urban health centre has sent some Bisleri mineral water bottles to the state health department's laboratory in Panaji after suspended particles were found in them. (NT) AIDS HOSPITAL PLANNED: Vasco MLA, Mr Rajendra Arlekar, who has taken the initiative to form a legislators' forum to fight the AIDS menace in Goa, said that the State government is thinking of opening a special hospital to take care of AIDS patients. Speaking at the launch of a NGO-Zindagi-in Panjim on Tuesday, Mr Arlekar called for better co-ordination and interaction between NGOs, legislators and the Goa State AIDS Control Society. (H) WORK ON CHORAO ROAD: Cumbharjua MLA and Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar assured Chorao villagers that he would see to it that the best possible route to the proposed bridge linking the Chorao island will be selected within the next fifteen days. Madkaikar was speaking after he inaugurated the work of the retaining wall and extension of the road at Karabhat-Chorao. (GT) DIVAR TEMPLE SITE TO BOOST PILGRIM TOURISM: The area around Hatkeshwar temple in Divar (Pornem Tirth) at the confluence of Sapth Sangam (where seven rivulets meet) has been tentatively identified for promoting pilgrim tourism. The plan will include reconstruction of the old Hatkeshwar temple and installation of a huge Lord Ganesh idol, creation of facilities there for displaying replicas of traditional occupations, arts and crafts, a small auditorium, bathing facilities for women, restaurant, etc. (H) COUNCILLOR ASSAULTS COP: A Corporation of the City of Panaji councilor was allegedly involved in an ugly assault on a traffic policeman at the junction near the Customs and Central Excise building yesterday. (GT) UNHYGIENIC BEEF: Even as unhygienic beef and mutton is being transported to South Goa on a large scale from outside the state, the concerned authorities are yet to take action and curb this menace. (NT) CONTAMINATION OF RASSAIM SPRING: The Loutulim health centre yesterday confirmed in its report submitted to the Director of Health Service that the spring water in Rassaim at Pensanv Bhatt emits chemical odour. The medical officer, Dr Sheila Devari, states, "There is a strong odour to the spring water and also the water in the vicinity." (GT) LPG LADEN TRUCK COLLIDES WITH BUS: Panic gripped people near the Borim bridge on Tuesday evening when a truck loaded with about 300 refilled LPG cylinders skidded off the road and collided with an oncoming minibus. (H) NATIONAL AWARD FOR 3 PANCHAYATS: The Goa government has recommended the names of three panchayats for the National award. The three selected are Penha da Franca, Ambaulim in Quepem taluka and Shiroda. (GT) ABORTIVE BID ON BANK: Hours after gold ornaments and cash worth Rs.1.78 lakh were stolen in broad daylight at Borda and Fatorda in Margao on Monday, unknown culprits made an abortive bid to break open the Colva branch of the Bank of Baroda during the night. (H) OPEN SEASIDE SPACES ARE ENDANGERED: Every tourist, no matter how high-yielding or low-budget, is enamoured by the rustic ambience of the Goan beach shack. In every guide book, the beach shack is glorified. Even the famous Goa promo film "Dil Chahta Hai" had them all. But there can be too much of any good thing. And if the beach shacks are allowed to gradually become permanent, this is the surest way to destroy a beach.
