According to the sources vehicles loaded with unhygienic beef and mutton arrive at Margao from Belgaum and other places in the wee hours of the day. These vehicles usually arrive once in about two or three days and the distribution is carried out through retailers. Persons operating this business also do not have valid licenses for the same.
Although officials of the veterinary department had raided vehicles transporting mutton and beef, the activity continues unabated. It is also alleged that a large-scale slaughtering of animals is on at various parts of Margao and nearby areas. However, the concerned authorities have not initiated any action.
Police officials said that they would identify the places from where unhygienic beef and mutton was being transported to South Goa and will collect the names of the persons who place orders for such unhygienic beef.
Recently, two persons arrested by the Margao town police engaged in transporting unhygienic beef from Belgaum to Margao were granted bail. An offence under Section 8 of Animal Preservation Act 1955 was registered and beef worth Rs 1.20 lakh was seized. --------------------------------------------------- The Navhind Times 29/10/03 page 3 ---------------------------------------------------
