MAN MURDERED IN TIVIM: The Mapusa police have registered a murder case
against unidentified persons for killing Pandurang Satadekar, 64, of Tivim,
at his residence behind Dhumaskar Hospital on Tuesday. The police found
injuries on the neck and blood oozing out of his mouth. He was alone at home
at the time of the incident. His wife Rukmini works in the Dena Bank,
Panaji, and daughter is an employee at the land survey office, Mapusa. (GT)



TWO NSS CAMPERS DROWN AT SATTARI: An NSS camp at Nanore-Sattari came to a
grinding halt when two students of St Francis Xavier Higher Secondary School
at Siolim, drowned in the Madai river on Wednesday (29 Oct) afternoon. A
batch of 85 students comprising of 54 boys and 31 girls, had gone for their
10-day NSS camp, which began on October 27. Some 15 volunteers reportedly
went to the Madai river for a swim, without the knowledge of their teachers.
A short while later, Astik Prabhakar Palyekar (18) of Gudem-Siolim began to
struggle in the river and shouted for help. Mithun Shamba Toraskar (17),
also from Gudem, went to his rescue, but he too found himself caught in the
deep waters. (H)



ONE FALLS TO DEATH: Harischandra Budko Harvalkar, a 35-year-old man from
Brahmakarmali in Sattari died after accidentally falling from a betelnut
tree at Khatodem-Sattari on Monday morning. (H)



CATAMARAN SERVICE FROM 6 NOV: The Goa-Mumbai catamaran service is likely to
be resumed from 6 November this year. Captain of Ports Capt AP Mascarenhas
said that the Mumbai-based Samlink Company had been already granted
permission by the State government to operate a 220 seater craft. The
company has expressed its readiness to start operations from Mumbai on 6
November. The catamaran will cover the distance in about eight hours while,
the fare structure would be finalised soon. (GT)



'HOARDINGS ALONG NHS TO BE DISMANTLED': The State government will start a
drive to dismantle advertisement hoardings along the national highways passi
ng through the State by next month and is also contemplating to formulate a
long-term policy for the same. The Chief Secretary, Mr DS Negi, said that
most of the roadside hoardings in Goa were unauthorized and had no
permission from the district collectors. (NT)



STATE POWER EXCHANGE TO TRADE ELECTRICITY: In a major development in the
power sector, Goa is planning to have a power exchange for trading in power.
This is considered to be the first project of its kind in the country. In
what is seen as a prelude to this, a high-level delegation from Goa is
already in Canada ostensibly on a study tour. The proposed power exchange
will undertake the operation of on-line trading on the lines of stock
exchange. Goa is already selling around 45-50 mega watts of its surplus
power, and crores of rupees have come into the State treasury. (H)



KNOWLEDGE, HEALTHCARE HUB: Goa has a very high potential for establishing
itself as a major healthcare and knowledge hub in the country, according to
the chairman of Finolex Cables Pvt Ltd, Pralhad P Chhabria. Goa, he said,
has all the ingredients necessary for setting up a knowledge-based industry.
Educational institutions of international standards offering unique courses
which can fetch high-salaried jobs will put Goa's name on the international
educational map. Chhabria founded the most prestigious institute in IT
called the International Institute of Information Technology in Pune. (H)



NOC FOR MOPA AIRPORT: Government of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation,
granted a No Objection Certificate to the state government to enter into a
Management Service Agreement with Technical Co-operation Bureau of
International Civil Aviation Organisation, Montreal, for conducting a
feasibility study for the construction of an international airport at Mopa.

GIRL ROBBED OF CHAIN: A youth snatched a gold chain worth Rs.7,000 from a
girl, Shivani Naik, at Khadpaband in Ponda, while she was playing with her
elder sister outside their residence. A youth approached them for drinking
water. When the elder sister went to fetch a glass of water, the youth
reportedly snatched the gold chain from the younger sister and fled away.

ALLEGATIONS SURROUND TRANSFER OF COPS: Allegations of political interference
and internal bickering surround yesterday's transfers of six police
inspectors and two police sub-inspectors. PI Gundu Naik is transferred to
Anti-Corruption Branch, Panaji, from Porvorim, where Anjuna PI Wilson D'
Souza is due to take over. PI NC Raikar will take charge of Anjuna police
station while PI Vincy Paes has been transferred from Anti-Narcotics Cell to
the Police Training School, Valpoi. PI Roy Pereira of the Panaji traffic
Cell will replace Paes in the ANC. PI Dinraj Govekar has been transferred
from Colva to North Goa while PSI Jivba Dalvi will take charge of his post.
PSI Siddarth Shirodkar is transferred from Vasco to Agassaim. (GT)



INSURANCE COVER FOR NEW-BORN LIKELY: The Bharatiya Janata Party's doctors'
cell has recommended to the State government that it should work out a
scheme to ensure that every new-born is covered under some medical insurance
scheme from January 1, 2004. (H)



GUJ CALLS OFF STIR: Goa Union of Journalists, Panaji, has decided to call of
the month-long agitation, seeking withdrawal of Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar's notices to sections of the press, on the ground that these were
without any basis as the factual details about the offence committed has not
been stated therein. (GT)



'GOA LACKING IN FILM CULTURE': If one is to go by the views advocated by
award winning Malayalam film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, then voices
critical of Goa being chosen as the permanent venue for the International
Film Festival of India are far from silent. In a recent interview to the
"Times of India", Gopalakrishnan admitted that Delhi was not the ideal place
to stage international film festival."I don't see the logic of building
another complex in Goa where, for one, there is no film culture," he had
claimed, while reacting to the proposed shifting of the film festival to
Goa. While Gopalakrishnan admitted that Goa is a good tourist spot, he felt
tourists would never go to Goa to see films. "And even if they do, there is
every possibility that the beaches would take them away," he asserted. (H)

South Goa came to the fore when the South Goa district Congress committee

CHANDER, NEW DIG: Senior Indian Police Service officer, Muktesh Chander, was
recently promoted to the post of Deputy Inspector General of Police (CID) of
Goa. An electronics and communications engineer, Chander has handled several

MARGAO LAD IS BOLLYWOOD'S NEW 'SHOOTING' STAR: Sharmad Pai Raiturkar, born
and brought up in Goa, has shot films in Switzerland, Egypt, London, Wales
and Malaysia. Not to speak of his travel exploits throughout India shooting
different films. Sharmad is the numero uno assistant cinematographer to

GOAN GETS HOMI BHABHA SCIENCE AND TECH AWARD: Dr Prasad Anant Naik of the
Centre for Advanced Technology has been awarded Homi Bhabha Science and
Technology Award for the year 2002. Dr Naik hails from Nerul in Goa. This is
the highest award of DAE and carries a medal, citation and cash prize of
Rs.50,000. The award was presented at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre,
Mumbai, by Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairman, Department of Atomic Energy. (GT)



PAINTINGS EXHIBITION: An exhibition of paintings and sculptures entitled
"Images and Echoes" by Jeetendra R Fadte, will be open at the Kala Academy's
Art Gallery from 10 am to 7 pm.
