MUKTA

Indian Sitar & World Jazz

The most beautiful projects often take shape during a meeting. This is the case of Mukta (Pearl in Sankrit), a stunning and unique group, which derives its musical influences from the crossroads of the East and the West. They will be performing in Goa at the Bogmalo Beach Resort on the 14th of November 2003. Members please collect your passes from our office or at the venue by presenting your membership cards. Here are some details about the group:

The adventure begins in 1994 from Nantes when Simon Mary, a bass player passionately in love with the Indian music, decides to learn the subtle art of sitar&He thus crosses the path of Brigitte Menon, specialist of this instrument, Menon has nearly lived seventeen years in India to study music with the greatest contemporary masters. The teacher-student rapport is soon going to transform into a musical intricacy, full of promises&Brigitte gives to the jazzman another manner to approach music. Simon, he dreams of new fusion, different linking, faraway and&imaginary voyages. Mukta will be the name of the code of this unedited utopian music which is slowly going to mature and develop.

Supported by the two associates coming from Nantes, Geoffrey Tamisier (trumpet and melodica&) and Jean Chevalier (drums), the bass player and the sitarist attempt the impossible. Avoid the traps of exotic collages slightly futile, accomplish the fusion between two kinds of music, confront and then fuse the two different cultures. They create a style which integrates the constraints of both the types of music. In short, invent a demanding and ambitious world jazz , against all the clichs. We are a group of jazz which does not play jazz, but at the same time plays all kind of jazz explains Simon Mary, mischievously.

The result is this first album, Indian sitar and world jazz : and it outshines all the hopes. A mutant jazz weaved on the frame of oriental and shimmering accents. A simple music, limpid, evident (and mostly improvised), sometimes sharpened by a touch of funk&The alchemy of Mukta succeeds in reconciling with the air and the fire, the metallic burstsof Don Chery or of John Coltrane with the great compositions of Ravi Shankar. The step is new and profoundly modern (certain titles have been however remixed by DJ Laurent Allinger, member of Little Rabbits, Mathieu Ballet or still Sporto Kantes).

At the time when the notion of Global village is affecting with great force the universe up to the compartmentalization of the music, Mukta designs the contours of a new territory. The outlines of a reviewed and corrected geography, where the paths of Kathmandu and Benares hence forth pass through Nantes&A first of its kind ! Mukta stands apart from the other lots like a lighthouse which from the top of its bright light reassures us.

Mukta, which digs its roots in many sources, offers us a fresh sound and tune of today. A critic s ear will not miss here to recognize numerous references and to compare them with the thousands psychedelic of the sixties or with the groups such as Oregon and CoDoNa. Never the less, beyond these preconceived ideas, what is remarkable at once is the sincerity and generosity of this music.

If the originality of the group lies partially in the unusual choice of the instruments (sitar, trumpet, double bass, bass clarinet plus a whole range of percussions), it also derives its force from the five individuals who have created it. They believe in the same musical expressions, and are deeply committed in order to make the group bear its fruits. Mukta is a group of dreams, the rare pearl. Five talented artists who use all the instruments and who incorporate body and soul in a musical concept and in a group sound. However, among these five voices, one is clearly distinguished as in any other good group : that of Simon Mary which humbly plays the delicate role of leader.

World jazz is not born yesterday. Nevertheless, it has always been wrongly considered worst as ramification of jazz-rock, or better as an eccentric phenomenon. Jade the new disc of Mukta, opens the way to vast horizons, to a world jazz which will have its place of choice in the musical adventures of the nascent century. Each piece of the album possesses a proper ambience and a specific musical vocabulary, in a manner which is more pronounced than the preceding one. It is clear that a long walk on the roads of music has allowed them to head towards a more focussed group approach, encouraging them all the while to discover the influence of many more mysterious and faraway lands.

The original four members, Geoffroy Tamisier, Brigitte Menon, Simon Mary and Jean Chevalier, are always there. But in Jade the arrival of a new entrant, the percussionist Olivier Congar, who handles as well the Cuban dreams (batas) as the congas and the African sanzas, has enabled more successfully teh Indian inflexions with the traces of other sonorities gleaned from the Atlantic ocean up to Balkans.

Dancing On One s Hands teh aelectronic project is the additional proof of the authenticity and the purity of this group which is decidedly not like any other groups.

So members, we hope you will not miss this spectacular event this month!
