Dr Amonkar, speaking to The Navhind Times further added that the study of four cases pertaining to the disease which were recently observed in the jurisdiction of the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC), revealed that the patients were non-Goans and had migrated to Goa. He also refuted the allegation that the disease was spreading in other parts of the state.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has issued a notice to PMC, asking the municipal body to undertake cleanliness operations in the city at the earliest to prevent the spread of the disease. The town witnessed 4 cases of dengue fever during past 4 months.
A DHS source informed TNT that the state witnessed around 9 patients suffering from dengue this season. "There is however not a sudden rise in the number of cases of dengue in the state," the source said, pointing out that previously there was no machinery with the Goa Medical College (GMC) hospital which was required to diagnose the disease and hence the patients suffering from it could not be identified. The source further informed that at present the availability of such machinery at GMC has been instrumental in tracing the disease.
Ponda has been in the forefront as far as the number of dengue patients traced so far is concerned. The other places have recorded occasional cases of dengue. The DHS has till date not recorded any death resulting from this illness.
The DHS source further said that the water which forms a breeding ground for the malaria anopheles mosquitoes, can also act as a breeding place for the mosquitoes spreading dengue.
"The DHS, after deducing that the area under the jurisdiction of PMC was evolving into a major breeding ground for the carrier mosquitoes of dengue fever, gave a oral intimation to the municipality regarding cleaning of Ponda and its surrounding areas. However, due to PMC's lethargy in carrying out the order, the DHS was compelled to issue a notice to it," the source said.
The DHS is also taking precautionary measures for controlling the spread of the disease in other parts of the state. The health service officials are carrying out the inspections of the areas, which show increase in the number of dengue patients. --------------------------------------------------- The Navhind Times 28/10/03 page 3 ---------------------------------------------------
