ALLOTMENT OF SHACKS AT COLVA STAYED: The allotment and construction of shacks at Colva beach has been stayed. Judge VSR Dessai has directed the Tourism Minister and Director of Tourism to maintain status quo till the disposal of the petition filed by Rosa Maria Pacheco, who has been setting up a shack for the last 20 years. (GT) ANGHANA MURDER: LIE-DETECTOR TEST ON SUSPECTS NEGATIVE: Police investigations in the sensational Anghana Shirodkar murder case of Mapusa, suffered a severe setback with the lie-detector test conducted on two of the key suspects yielding negative results.The Goa police meanwhile, are also banking heavily on the time-tested 'lie-detector test' to give a much-needed boost to the investigations of another sensational murder of a young woman-Tanuja Naik. (H) STRAY CATTLE TO BE IMPOUNDED: The State government, in keeping with its assurance to reduce the stray cattle menace, will commence its work of impounding the stray cattle from Saturday. All stray cattle found on the roads, foot-paths, highways, beaches, will be impounded. The fine for the release of the animals may include transport cost. (GT) ARRESTED UNDER FOREIGN EXCHANGE ACT: One Harish KN Gandhi, a middle-aged man from Chembur-Mumbai, was detained by the Margao police yesterday under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Act while he was proceeding to a local court in Margao. (H) 'STAR FLYER' CRUISE SHIP: When the white-sailed "Star Flyer" dropped anchor off Dona Paula on Monday, she heralded the start of a new season for cruise ships in Goa. A neglected aspect of Goa's tourism industry, cruise ships can contribute substantially, both in terms of revenue as well as tourist inflow. While a lot of hype surrounds charter flights (and trains), cruise liner tourism-which boasts an almost exclusive wealthy client list-is low profile. While charter flights are greeted by high-ranking government dignitaries and cultural programmes at the Dabolim airport, cruise ships are forced to berth either at Mormugao port, amidst heaps of iron ore and coal, or drop anchor off-shore, smaller boats ferrying passengers to Dona Paula. (GT) ALLEGED RAPE OF DAUGHTER: Additional sessions court in Margao yesterday acquitted a man charged for allegedly raping his daughter. According to the prosecution, the accused Sudhakar Naik allegedly raped his daughter in a primary school at Nagoa-Verna on 30 March, 2000. Medical examination report of the victim and accused was negative. (GT) DECEASED GOANS' FORTUNE IN KUWAIT BANKS: The Kuwaiti government has published names of five deceased Goans, who hold money in Kuwait banks, asking their relatives to claim the amount at the earliest. According to the information published in the Arabic language "Kuwait Alyoum Official Gazette", the Kuwaiti Ministry of Justice has asked the next of kin of Jose Martina Pinto (File Number 297/86), D'Souza Anthony Nasemento, Minio Francisco Fernandes, Alex Anthony Cleaver and Sushma Fukita. DEMISE OF SP ATTORNEY OF MAPUSA COMUNIDADE: We have just received a message informing us about the death of Vincent Braganza, the Special Attorney of the Comunidade of Mapusa, on 30 October in Madras, where he had gone on a tour with his family members. Says the Attorney of the Mapusa Comunidade, Mr Michael Carrasco, "Vincent Braganza figured among the handful of persons who are well versed in Comunidade procedures. He was the virtual backbone of the Comunidade of Mapusa, where he guided and advised several Managing Committees from 1995 onwards." The funeral will be held in Madras this evening. The Comunidade of Mapuca has offered a mass in memory of Vincent Braganza on November 5 at 8 am at St Jerome's Church in Mapusa. (NT) GADGET TO AVOID DROWNING: Mr Sudhin Sambhari of Margao has developed an innovative concept to reduce the increasing number of deaths due to drowning in the Arabian Sea. He has developed a steel pipe base model which, he feels, can work wonders. The system can be placed at about 200 metres on any side from the centre of the beach. He is a BFA (Fine Art) student of the Goa College of Art and a computer graphics artist. (GT) TRIBUTES TO A MELODY KING: Alfred Rose was distinctly an icon of the Konkani stage. Though several of his hit songs were composed decades ago, the topics were and are of relevance even today. His songs carried a message to the listener and they were a story in themselves. In his death, the stage has lost not only a great artist and singer but also a great visionary. For nearly six decades, he served the stage with dedication and zeal bringing along numerous novelties, innovations and changes.
