Cecil, I admire the list you have given below of all the unique things in Mapusa. By the way the Mapusa Market itself is Unique, and one of its kind in whole of Asia when it was built in 1960. The design latter was copied by many in different states of India, specially Maharastra and Karnataka. Although this market was built during the fag end of Portuguese regime in Goa. The credit should go to our late Fetor Dr.Antonio Pinto do Rosario of Porvorim the renown gynecologist who was the President of Camara Municipal de Bardez then. Have you noticed, all the cloth merchants and Goldsmiths were put in the front row shops? Shops selling other varieties came later in this row. Even fish vendors had their place in this market, besides Narlancho bazaar and the flower market. Gift shops, Food-grain shops, cobblers, cutlery shops etc had their own respective venues. You will know the restaurants (Xaviers block or Cafe Corner block) were so well placed. But now it is all become "Khajem". The uniqueness is disappearing.

In other restaurants you have to order the snacks. In these Mapusa restaurants the snacks are served without you asking!! But there are lots of other things that makes Mapusa unique, BESIDES the Friday Market. A few: 1) Khotokhotem (hardboiled jaggery with nuts, ginger etc - like hard chikki) - Only available at Anand's 2) Chonnevale - Gramsellers near Aldona Taxi Stand 3) On-the-spot tailors (in passages of Municipal Market Front Facade - mostly stitching flimsy garments for 'hippies') 4) Abolim and local flowers section (unlike the normal florists section in other cities) 5) Cheap cotton garments section (mostly T-Shirts) 6) Only-Silver Merchants (as opposed to Gold & Silver elsewhere) 7) Traditional Baker section (specially the unique God Poye) 8) Coconut Jaggery 9) Moundolim Kellim (similar to Moira bananas) 10) Shops selling only traditional Ropes and Cords (razu & summ) 11) Entire clay pottery section I am sure Mapshekars like Alfonso Bond Braganza, Miguel Braganza etc. will be able to add lots more to this list. The criteria of course should be that the particular product/service is unique to Mapusa and is not specific to the Friday Market, which is a category in it's own.
