Hi All New Zealand has one of the highest youth suicide rates (along with Samoa and we have the largest population of Samoans here outside Samoa). I wonder if any of the resources that are being developed here can be useful. You might be interested in knowing that there is a non-government organisation that assists communities and services to prevent youth suicide by providing them with high quality information called "SPINZ", the URL is: http://www.spinz.org.nz/flash/movie.asp I have also designed a website of mental health resources (among other things)which can be found on:http://www.wairua.com/ruth/mentalhealth.html
East African Goans may also be interested in knowing that within the mental health system (in England and Wales), women born in India and east Africa have a 40% higher suicide rate than those born in England and Wales. The full text of this article can be found at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/guardianpolitics/story/0,3605,1064688,00.html This is a sad outcome for the individual and their loved ones and I think strategies need to be developed at many levels. From school age upward. Ensuring both psychological and social support are accessible and that stigma is addressed.
